Hello?!?! Is that you?

That was the sentence just yelled to me when I answered the phone. Yes, it was me, but not the Bonnie the super old caller was looking for. Anyway. House progress chugs along. Right now I have a couple of guys out my window working on putting in a new gas line. I'll get to why in a minute, but the thing annoying me now is that they are whistling. I do not like whistling, please if you meet me do not whistle around me. I would ask him to stop, but I've tried that with another worker and he was cold to me the whole rest of the day. So I've got my music up.

This is the water heater story. A week or so ago the plumber came to install a new water heater for us, as the 40 gallon we have now would not be able to heat three bathrooms when you include the run from our lower level all the way up to the top floor. A much bigger water heater wouldn't work because it couldn't be much taller than the water heater we have now, due to a flu issue (it has to drop at a certain grade, it's in the basement and the area it's tucked into is short, so not much room to fall). So we went with a 50 gallon that did this high BTU thing where it could re-heat the whole tank in three minutes, sounded good to me. Turns out that even though it was just a little bigger it wouldn't work. So we went back to the original plan, which was to twin up a second 40 gallon of the same size (which is now not a standard size). They would work in tandem to get us all the hot water we needed.

When I got home Tuesday from my diaper buying fun times there was a guy (that I had never seen before) up on top of a tall ladder with his head shoved into my chimney. I pulled up, got out of the car and said, "hey what's going on?" He said nothing to me, came down the chimney and went into the house. Um… So I followed him down to the lower level and said, "hey, what's going on?" They told me that the 6 inch flu liner they needed to put into the old flu (which is really just one half of the chimney, I didn't realize they it was split apart) wouldn't fit into our 6 inch flu. I asked them why they were even messing with it (our flu has been working fine), well when you go to mess with the flu at all (like connecting a new water heater) you have to bring the thing up to code (which is not terra cotta, the liner that is in there). They worked on it for hours but the terra cotta is broken, and even if it was in tact perfectly the size just would never work. Cue head explosion, what do you do then (and how expensive is the fix going to be)?

A couple of options were presented to me. I immediately ruled out electric water heater, as we'd have to get our electrical updated because our box is maxed out and couldn't handle the big water heater we need. The second option was a thing called a power vent water heater. Still gas, but it has a thing on it that forces air out the a hole instead of just I guess the gasses automatically venting out. Okay, but since this is a basement we'd have to drill a big hole in the foundation and the vent would need to come out the front of the house, and couldn't have anything cover it. I'd really love a big hole on the front of my house blowing gas out when ever I used hot water, that would be so hot. NOT.

The last option was a tankless water heater mounted outside. I have nothing against tankless water heaters, Bj, he's not such a fan. The problem is that it's not like we can just put up a tankless water heater. Because they are mostly off (and that's how they save energy), when they do come on in order to heat the water quickly and indefinitely they use a lot of gas all at once. This takes a bigger gas line. A one inch line (guess how big ours is? hint – not an inch). Plus water and electricity has to be ran there. In spite of all of that we decided to do the tankless. It is really the only viable option, and will save us money on gas bills. I've done lots of research on it now, and we're going to go with a Noritz, it has the best reviews out of everything I looked at. It seems the most important thing is calculated need/GPM and having new pipes (we do now). So I call up the plumber who is coming today to put it in and tell him that we decided on tankless and Noritz and he says, "oh that one is back ordered for two weeks."

Blog, "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!" And now that they have fiddled so much with our old 40 gallon my showers are running out of hot water… and I'm not even washing my hair! Le sigh.

Really that's probably boring to all of you, but I had to write it down for prosperity's sake. Like when I blogged about the ginormous disaster of having to water-proof my basement. Because now it doesn't seem so bad, my "lower level" has never had an ounce of water in it, it smells so fresh and clean, never moist, and we use every inch of the space. So this too will seem good later, and I'll need to remember that I thought it was craziness and wanted to cry that now we can't get our stroller and fun ridiculous baby things. Of course I will be able to bathe the baby in warm water, so that's good. Plus how much can I really complain, it's going to rock up there!

To make myself feel better Emilie and I made this last night:
Piles-1

Muddy Buddies.

And I washed all the wipes Sciarrino and I made (okay mainly Sciarrino):
Piles-2

And I had the guys pop in the sink so I could see what it's going to look like in the bathroom:
Piles-3

pretty awesome. Now I just realized that it's cold in here because our gas must be turned off… and those guys left without saying anything. But I can't worry about that, I'm going to get a massage. 🙂

Life is good.

snapshots

I'm going to focus on the positive. Maybe tomorrow I'll talk to you about the water heater fiasco.

Yesterday I went to Corvallis and had lunch with Sarah (so fun thanks again Sarah) and picked up the rest of our newborn diapers.
Snap-3

Here is what I wrote about when we first chose to cloth diaper. The fitted diapers are in the back and the covers on the right (three of them: blue, red and white). I ended up getting a bunch of all-in-ones because they were clearing them out and were on sale for $12 a diaper (fitted are $11.50 and the covers for them are $11, all in ones are everything in one). I promised Bj I wouldn't get pink 🙁 but I did sneak in one lavender colored diaper. I also got a couple of little liners to double with the all-in-ones for longer car trips or overnight. They are all sitting on this really nice soft pad that can be used in bed or whatever, so if you change the baby there or breastfeed the extra fluids won't ruin your sheets. I also got a half dozen toddle sized pre-folds to have around the house so that I can change the baby in multiple places. They had more of these fuzzy pads, but this was a much more economical choice. So I think we're all set for the newborn phase (and hopefully through to about 16 pounds). I did get a roll of paper liners for the first merconium poo, because that can be hard to get off anything.

This makes me so excited to set up the changing table which I can do as soon as the carpet is installed… which is happening today!
Snap-4

I thought everyone had left up there because it was so quiet – 8lb carpet pad + heavy berber = awesome noise reduction. I'm very happy that we got carpet up there. It is extremely low VOC and doesn't smell at all. Oh wait, I have to wait for one more thing, all the trim to be done after the carpet goes in. But hopefully, hopefully that will be by this weekend.

Snap-5

At the same time the tile is going in the bathroom. It looks awesome. They'll finish the countertops before doing the floors. So mid-week next week we should get our final inspection? I hope so, then we can move up there. Meanwhile I'm using this sort of thing to keep me zen:

Snap-2

I traded one of my Sundara colors for this, Granny Smith. Halfway through one baby sweater in green and I already want to cast on for another!

Knitting it up

First of all a winner: Jen Gough I drew your name so email me your address (link in the upper right) and I'll get this book off to you!

Second, I couldn't figure out how to choose between all my new yarn. So I dug out one of my older skeins of Sundara, I am such a dork. I do the same thing with scrapbooking paper I love, I freeze up when I want to use it. To be fair though I've had this skein wound to use for a month because I love it so much, and it goes so well with the handspun.
Sweater-1

Here are the details on Ravelry.

Now I'm headed to lunch with Sarah, then picking up some newborn diapers!

Even more yarn… and a give away

Sciarrino and I had so much fun yesterday going to the Blue Moon sale. The only bummer was my neighbor being too sick to come, though I appreciate her not wanting to get me sick! The Socks that Rock part of my haul:
Blue Moon-20

There is so much yumminess in that basket! I think I got enough of the greens to figure out a simple sweater for myself. That is all mediumweight on the bottom, but five skeins of heavyweight on the top. Yes, it has been pointed out to me that there is lots of pink. I only really buy this yarn once a year and it could be a girl, though almost everyone swears I'm having a boy (even strangers). I also got some other types of yarn:
Blue Moon-19

Matching mama/baby sweaters? This is 2,000 yards of yarn. Or of pure goodness if you perfer. Mmmm.

And now the give-away. Blue Moon was handing out free copies of a favorite book of mine: New Pathways for Sock Knitters: Book One. I actually got two (I did say I got a lot of yarn!) and gave one to Tracy to help her get over her cold. And I decided that my other one should go to you! I used the book to knit the socks for grandpa and me this fall (I talk about them here, here and here). Sock knitting is really not that hard, and very zen. Plus easy to cart around project!

If you would like to win a copy of the book just leave a comment by 7pm pacific time Monday, December 8th, 2008. Good luck!

Sundara – yarn from heaven

Oh man am I smitten.
Sundara-3

Way back in October I signed up for a couple of Sundara clubs. Yesterday my yarn came. After asking the guys if my mailman had come yet about 16 times Harvey walked into my room and handed me four boxes. I ripped into those suckers like a crazed kid at Christmas. I knew what three of the colors were going to be, and that I didn't get to keep them all (I split a subscription), but still so exciting.
Sundara-2

Because this kind of yarn is a commodity over on Ravelry I'll get to trade the colors I don't absolutely adore. I'm going to wait until after tomorrow though, because I'm going to Blue Moon's destash sale. Remember last year? Me too (and I've used a big chunk of that yarn up), I don't know if I'll be able to sleep I'm so excited. So more yarn tomorrow. For today a couple more shots:
Sundara-6

I thought Ceara would love this, all the purples together.
 Sundara-5

And my mom this one, all the fall-ish colors.

Now to knit or just stare at it some more? Hmmm.

Dailies

I know I'm not the only one doing the December Daily thing with Ali. But I thought I would share my (really simple) take.
December-5

Each day is like the one on the right, with a simple band of Ki Memories attached by staples, and a number stamped on Bazzill (orange peel texture, my favorite). I printed out little pictures from the day with my 4×6 picture mate. I need to figure out how to get two pictures to a page. Right now I just print a little picture in the middle with a huge border, a bit wasteful.
December-6

The schedule sheet is from an old daily journal no one ever used.
December-7

Paper source scalloped tag. The B47 is from waiting in line at a new favorite place of mine: Winks. It's this old school (like 90 years old old school) hardware store in Portland that had all the parts I needed for my door. You take a number and they'll look through there plethora of random drawers (that I so wanted to steal) and find what you need. The woman in front of me had a broken purse part. 🙂

I still need to do yesterdays. I mean I wrote an entry for it, but don't have much interesting to go with it ephemera wise. And no pictures, because we all know I've been headed on a downhill path taking pictures daily. I am willing to bet that changes with the addition of our miniature human.

I'm thinking that I'll need a new organized space for the maximum crafting opportunity in the minimum amount of time. I've been dreaming:
Dream-1

Bj would say scheming… I may have measured out everything I want to go in the room in detail so I could see how it would fit on my mock up shelving, but hey, who wouldn't? Besides it's always good to know how tall everything you own is in inches, right?

Right now I'm in package receiving mode. Bring them to me! Today I got two nursing gowns, I still have to try them on as the overzealous construction workers aren't the most respectful of personal space, but they look comfy. I also got the diaper bag I have been coveting:
December-1

I had to google the crap out of this thing to find the color (Ogo) as it is a spring only offering.
December-2

I just have a few blankets in there now. It's a re-run messanger bag by Flueville. Meaning it's made of old plastic pop bottles (ten in fact). I had a backpack in high school I loved that was made out of recycled plastic. Totally different style, but that thing held up so well. It died one day when I had a bad red ink pen accident, otherwise I'd probably still have it.

And a mail surprise:
December-3

Taro sent me this along with a way cute Japanese knitting and crochet book. My favorite pattern:
December-4

My Japanese is beyond horrible (I took it in high school), but I get the gist, luckily numbers are universal. My friend asked why the Japanese have all the cute stuff.  I don't know, but I agree, they definitely do!

Now pardon me while I go roll around in the Sundara yarn that just showed up on my doorstep. It is too beautiful.

Progress… on all fronts

This past weekend was the most relaxed I've been since the remodel started. We started out having thanksgiving at Brett and Michele's. Ah the wonderfulness of a casual holiday. And of course my wonderful god-daughter V who couldn't be more adorable. Unfortunately I was so relaxed I took zero pictures of the day, oops! I did have Bj snap one of me this weekend as I've been beyond terrible at getting the weekly pregnancy shots (I'm lucky to have one a month):
Progress-1

Angela did offer to take pictures of me, like professionally, and I should take her up on it, but ugh do I feel pregnant! Tired and achy and um gigantic. I should have had them done a few weeks ago. I'm still thinking about it though Angela. Feeling the baby squirm like it's trying to escape has brought on a sense of urgency in getting things ready. So while most everything is at my mom's still I did go there today and grab a few outfits and all the diapers I've accumulated so far. The baby has a place in the house:
Progress-11

One whole shelf in our hall closet. I bought the baby one toy (a Haba called Max). Could not resist. I told Bj I felt like a terrible mother not having a single toy for baby. Of course it was pointed out to me that the baby had lots of squishy toys and things. And that it won't play with toys at the beginning, but I had to have a little wooden toy for my baby. I got four glass bottles, just in case. My mom says breastfeeding will be no problem, just as she's told me birth will be great. I think one of the best things my mom has given me is confidence in my own motherhood. I love hearing wonderful stories of birth and breastfeeding. The green bag holds a few clothes, the big bag is full of wipes Sciarrino and I have made, and a few blankets. The pail, is that not fabulous? I ordered liner bags and they came a freaky weird short and stout size, so I searched Ikea today and found that. I also found those long white containers with the tabs, they'll fit perfectly in the changing table my mom is painting for me. Oh I have lots more coming. Bj talked me out of black Friday sales… in the stores. I spent hours shopping online. I have one more Christmas present to find, everything is almost done.

The house continues to chug along. Today the scaffolding came down outside. It will be back for siding removal/replacement after Christmas (I'm guessing). They'll have to tent our house and do one side at a time because of the weather. And they have to take apart our porch in the back, sorry Bj I can't pretend to be sad about this one, I hate that thing! Meanwhile inside:
Progress-2

The bathroom I just cleaned. Came home today to find it covered with grit and the shower curtain pulled down. It's hard to be mad about it when it means the holes are getting covered. Mom, I will be showing up at your house in the morning to take a bath, you've been warned.
Progress-4

The "lower level" is showing similar progress. It's amazing how much quieter the house gets with out all the exposed studs. I would like them to fix the stairs though, they still have no backs, and thus I can't quite get the storage room cleaned up.
Progress-6

And behind this door… The cabinets for the bathrooms upstairs, in a giant pile. Behind the actual door though:
Progress-7

Some of the cabinets built in! This is the den, my future craft area. Oh do I have plans for this area? Yes I do… wickedly cool plans. The kind of thing that causes Bj and I to get into giggling tickle fights. "Oh I'm just dreaming Bj." "How come all your dreams seem to come true?" Hmm, because I'm very persuasive, and I have the best husband ever?!?! Up those stairs:
Progress-8

Painting has begun. We tried to pick another color, but we just love this one so much it's going in our new bedroom as well (it's the old bedroom/new den color). We did (finally just today) agree on a lighter green than this for our master bathroom. Bj was pushing a yellow color, but ladies how do you do make up in a yellow bathroom? And to come next week:
Progress-3

Tile (our car was riding so low after picking up the floor tile).
Progress-10

New doors old school style. We picked these up this weekend also. A little more than I budgeted for, as we have to buy the part that goes IN the door, there are so many darn things to think about! The doors get delivered Wednesday, the toilets and sinks Monday. I'm ready for my new hot water heater now Mr. Awesome Plumber. Oh and um, this is supposed to be finished in two weeks, remember? Bj and I have zero plans for decorating the nursery (well besides sticking random furniture in there), but I still want it to be done. Most of all I want the nook in our bedroom to be finished as the cradle and changing table go in there. And eventually a little baby… that better hang out in utero for at least three more weeks! I should get better at updating least you think I've gone into labor or something. I mean I still have a holiday party to host here on the 13th!

Free Association Wednesday

I know, when is the last time I did one of these? I'm finally using Dianne's word from the last free association. Remember it's easy to play along just comment on the first thing that pops into your head, a story, a word, a phrase anything! And if you need help see the first Free Association Wednesday.

Monster Shower

Yesterday Sciarrino through me a monster baby shower. It wasn't actually monster huge, but literally about monsters. You may have seen this link in my side bar. Bj and I loved the monsters so much that Sciarrino came up with the idea to throw a shower where we made them. Her place looked so cozy
Monster-1

And she was a wonderful hostess, of course. Check out her party favors:
Monster-2

(from last minute patchwork and quilted gifts). We gathered around and made a bunch of friends for little baby:
Monster-3

Our results:
Monster-4

*edited: I put each monster up individually on my flickr page.
The only bummer about the shower was that a few friends couldn't come because they were sick. And Sarah's car got sick, so she was just able to pop in after she got rescued. I missed you guys! I got some more super cute baby things. It turns out most baby things only come in one style: super cute.
Monster-18

(card from Sarah). Baby got sweet little books (it's first chunky kind!), blankets, including some from Sue that were extra large for good swaddling, safety things, and tiny clothes:
Monster-14

These were made by Erin. She has gotten so good at batik since our adventure in dying this last summer. Bj freaked out about them, of course. I think he's going to be dressing the baby up more than me!

New…improved…WATER!

This sums up my life right now pretty well:
Sink-1

Remember how I said "It should be signed off on tomorrow so that we can finish sheet rocking," yesterday? Well it did get signed off on, but we couldn't sheet rock because we ran into a little problem. Turns out when you upgrade almost all your water pipes, and get blasting awesome pressure piped in from the street the loan 20 feet or so that didn't get replaced turns on you. Well at least that's what happened to us. I so so so did not want anything to be cut into on the Ribbon Jar side of my basement, but yesterday evening when they went to turn back on the water the kitchen was out of luck. Yucky rock type deposits were all that wanted to come out. The old pipes were clashing with the lovely new water from the new pipes. It was determined that those pipes had to be replaced also. Lucky for us (and the plumber) I am an insane picture taker (ever noticed?). So I dug through my files to find this picture:
Basement-1

Besides being scary and showing what the basement looked like before (yucky walls, termite beams, holes in the ceiling!), it shows the positioning of the floor joists. Because I had this picture they were able to thread the flexible piping through without having to cut a huge chunk of the ceiling out. Obsessive picture taking saves the day again! Now the plumbing really is ready for cover (no, not totally done, we're getting a new water heater and the fixtures will have to be put on after tile and everything is done upstairs). So sheet rock hanging can begin again (in one section they have put up and pulled down twice). The water tastes freaking fantastic out of the tap. I don't know if it's the difference in pipes, or just knowing that we have ALL NEW PLUMBING in our house. Either way imagine me clinking a glass of cold water with yours and saying, "cheers to plumbing cover!"
