Little spaces

So the upstairs is finally finished. There is touch up paint to do, but I'm like FORGET IT! I'll do it. I want my space worker free thank you. The alcove (in the little dormer at the front of the house) is finished:
123108-1

Of course not organized. It takes a very pregnant person a long to time get books and things up there I've found. Bj helped me last night, but then didn't want it too full. I did take up all my knitting books:
123108-2

And my big photo storage albums, as the shelves are quite generous (I think 15 and 16 inches tall). I think I want to keep knitting projects in progress up here, maybe my wheel as well, it just seems like such a fabulous cozy spot. Well it will be once the little tree is gone and I have a cushion all made up for the top and lots of pillows. I think we'll keep toys in the little cupboards. The rug is from Anthropologie, Sciarrino originally got it, but it didn't fit right in her place, so we bought it from her. It was a good jumping off point for the colors upstairs. And when I was designing these cabinets I made sure it would fit in between there.

I'm also going to organize the other little thing they had to finish upstairs:
123108-3

The master bath has a built in linen closet. It is sort of awkward to take a picture of being behind the door. Bj cleaned out this old plastic drawer thing he had and brought up all of our bath stuff so I can organize it. I love doing things like this. I might have to get out the label maker. The thing that cracks me up is the one thing Bj put in the drawer unit makes it so the drawer can't open (because he shoved in something bulky that doesn't really fit). Um, men, I still don't understand you people.

I'm going to take my belly and visit my neighbor's baby for the first time. Mmmm new baby I can't wait!
123108-4

Hey I still have my belly button!

I usually don’t share these…

But um, this takes the cake.

From my contact us page over at the Ribbon Jar:

"Questions/Concerns: how the hell do you find ANYTHING   FIRE THE WEB DESIGNER: THEY STINK"

You know, I always respond to people and tell them thanks for their feedback, no matter what it is. I figure I can always learn, but this one just got me, so I'm afraid they are not going to be hearing back from us. I initially put this under junk mail because I thought it was someone trying to get me to hire their web designer (which by the way is me). Now that I think it's real it's just cracking me up too bad. I stink. LOL, funny how she found the contact us page. ๐Ÿ™‚

Bits of this and that

I figured I'd better blog since people seem to think I've gone and had my baby already. I'll start to worry if it hasn't come by the end of January ๐Ÿ™‚ We had a super low key Christmas. Like our other friends due the same day, our minds are thinking ahead and Christmas sort of creeped up on us. We exchanged really simple gifts. Bj got me a wonderful pillowcase from the awesome Stitch and Dye and I love it. Luckily this pack rat had a form just the right size in her stash:
Bits-1

I think it will go in the den (my new crafting space). Bj's mom was sweet enough to clean the floors for me today after the guys got their tools out this weekend (whoo hoo).
Bits-2

I didn't want to bring anything into the room until it was clean, so now I can start to organize a bit in there. I decided to put the drafting table in the basement for packing orders and bring this table up because I can sit at it (and thus use my machine). I have been sewing, but boring stuff really (blog wise at least):
Window-1

I finished the curtains for upstairs (minus one, I'm still trying to figure out the rod situation for the alcove curtain). Out of the two curtains I had downstairs I made three big panels for the bedrooms, and two smaller ones for the bathrooms. I only had to buy one tension rod for baby's bathroom and some sets of rings to hang them on the bedroom rods, that's how I made them longer, by not having extra folds in the top. Speaking of the baby's room…
Bits-3

Bj went and picked up our stroller! I love it and we had tons of fun pushing it around pretending like our baby was in there. It's an Uppa Baby Vista that is a frame/component type stroller system. So on the frame you can lock in a car seat adapter, the bassinet, or a toddler seat. And all can face you which is awesome. The front wheels lock so you can run with it, and you can even get off-road type tires if you want to take it hiking. We love it and bonus: we're using the bassinet for the baby at the beginning since we don't have an actual bassinet or Moses basket.

The guys almost finished upstairs Saturday, but they have a little more painting/trimming out of the alcove to do. I can not wait. Be done I say! Then they'll tile the downstairs bathroom and caulk/prime the basement stairs. At the same time I need someone to come disconnect the old hot water heater and remove it. Besides that repairing a little bit of trim is all that needs to be done in the inside (by them, I still have lots of organizing to do!). We do have some cracks in our walls and ceilings, but we are going to give it a couple of months to settle more before those get routed out and filled. So it will be outside work only from now on, with the porch scheduled for now, and the siding/painting scheduled for April. The finish line is in my sights, and baby is being so nice and good waiting for them to finish.

Merry Merry

The snow is thawing and it looks like it's going to be a traditional rainy Christmas. This is actually a good thing, we'll be able to get up to my dad's (we think). He still doesn't have power but that is not stopping us from being merry! I spent the morning cleaning up since we're going to have unexpected (but very welcome) visitors tonight. Sciarrino's flight was canceled a couple of nights ago, and she can't fly out until Friday so her and Ethan are going to come over tonight for game night, s'mores and a fire. It should be fun and low key, just what I love being this pregnant. I cleaned as much as I could with giganto-belly:
Eve-2

Yes the furniture is uncovered!!! This makes me oh so happy. There is still stuff to do for the remodel, but it's minimal and they shouldn't be in this area at all. I also cleaned out the den:
Eve-3

We stripped it for parts. ๐Ÿ™‚ The old curtains and rods in this room are going to be used up stairs. If I could get my sewing machine to set the correct tension I'd have new curtains up to show you already. The old ones were very wide (see) so I figured out that I could take them apart and make all the curtains for upstairs. I cleaned them and ripped apart all the seams last night. The only thing I really need is more pull backs (our type is discontinued). I know a certain someone (um, you mom) who has a pair that I'm going to try and convince her to give me, in exchange for a brand new pair! What do you say? I have other plans for this room, I have to figure things out very carefully so that my craft-age doesn't spill out into the walk way to the upstairs. Could be tricky.

And I finished up on the presents, one still needs to come UPS (they say it's on the truck) and we'll be good to go.
Eve-1

Here's hoping you all get what you want!

Oh and my walking/yoga (and due date) buddy had her baby last night. I'm so jealous! It's so so so so so so cute, and a boy. Everyone is having a boy, what are you little baby in my belly? I'm dying to know!

It’s freaking crazy outside!

Or as the local stations like to say: STORM WATCH ARCTIC FREEZE STORM 2008 or something like that. My cottage looks so cute!
122208-22
I mean icicles, we never get those! They even make the garbage can look cute. And snow does wonders to all manners of things you wish were not in your yard, like trailers of trash.
122208-26

The bad news is the ice accumulation:
122208-23

while pretty, this is a bad combination with tree branches. Bj and I are pretty sure we will loose our whole laurel hedge in the backyard. But that's nothing compared to some trees around here. My brother took us out last night in his big 4 wheel drive and we had to go all the way around the neighborhood to get out. The hill by our house the road was completely closed, and the other direction had a downed power line one way and a huge branch the other way. I know lots of cities get more than our foot or so of snow, but they have loads of plows and crew to take care of it. They can't even keep up on the interstates here, and one of them is closed for 50 miles. I mean it is CRAZY. Our city just put out a bulletin to stay in unless you must go out.

So this has slowed progress on my cottage a bit, but we now officially live upstairs, yeah! I took a ton of photos so instead of making this the longest blog post in history I'll just give you the link to my cottage set over on flickr. Here are some highlights:
122208-6

The baby's room. It's a sort of grey/blue/periwinkle color that I think is pretty gender neutral. I'm just so freaking excited to have all the baby's stuff at our house. Everything you see here was given to us, we are so lucky! Of course I had to make it our own. My mom painted the changing table and cradle white, and I recovered the swing. It was hard to do, I had to totally dismantle it and then use the fabric that was on it (a cream and black print) as a sort of pattern. I'm pretty sure the 15 warning tags would say not to do this, but it sure does look cute!
122208-7

Oh but, if anyone does have a swing like this can you tell me where those little clear plastic tab things go? It's the only thing I can't figure out how to get back together (in this picture you can see one hanging out on the right where the seat and back come together). The baby's changing table is ready to go:
122208-8

Bj and I like to just be in the baby's room and last night we were in here and Bj wanted me to go over the diaper situation. It was fun, we can't wait to have the little baby here (only we can so stay in there baby). Note the old door knobs, our whole upstairs has them to match the downstairs.

I also love our master suite. The bathroom is so awesome.
122208-12

We don't have sconces yet for next to the mirror because of discontinued stuff, and not being able to find anything else, but we have something coming now, so hopefully we'll get those up soon. I have drawers, DRAWERS in my bathroom. This is the coolest thing, and they are mostly empty because I don't know what to do with all my stuff, I'm not used to all this space. I love our counter tops and tile floor, but I need to find some more bathmats, brrr! We get to try the shower tonight, as it just got caulked today. Another favorite section:
122208-14

Somebody has a ton of clothes (not me), and told me that I had a lot of clothes. Well this was yesterday when I was all pissy and I got all upset because hello, I've been wearing the same two outfits for the past two weeks. So don't tell me I have to many clothes mister! Behind the door:
122208-18

Bj does this thing where he'll wear jeans again and in the mean time just toss them somewhere, it drives me nuts! So I came up with this behind the door hook system. It will save my sanity, I'm sure of it. Two stories down I finished up this:
122208-29

Mmm yummy green paint. I love it. I love it. And I love it some more. We're going to move the book case and things over tonight because they just have little touch up things to do. Oh and I have been knitting:
Leggings-1

Little leggings! (Ravelry link). And yes, I am still pregnant.
122208-1

And lest you think I'm nesting, I'm pretty much always this busy, and I've just been "chomping at the bit" to get the go ahead to get things organized, so I've had most of these projects ready to go for weeks. Hopefully I'll continue to update you, but who knows with all these trees, the power could go out at anytime. Oh and more pictures on my flickr.

That’s hot

It came early.
Hotness-1

Our tankless water heater was installed yesterday. The control panel is still not installed, but it is set automatically on 110 which is fine with me. I had my first shower with it this morning and it was hard to get out. The water temperature never changed one bit. Oh and please ignore our siding. It can't be replaced until the spring because it would never get warm enough for the paint to dry properly.

This is the remodel that never ends, yes it goes on and on my friends… Some people started remodeling not knowing…

You get the picture. We are going for our final interior inspection tomorrow, but that is contingent on people at the city willing to go out in the "storm". And we still might not be able to move everything up there this weekend (lots of little things to fix). However I am hopeful, so wish us luck.

Brrr time for more knitting

Well that didn't last.
Snow-1

I told all my friends to take the extra candy. In a fit of pregnancy induced craziness, obviously! So I have been dismantling it with my paper piercer. I got desperate, you see I'm a bit trapped:
Snow-4

(the backyard, normally I wouldn't show you a picture of it, since it's full of building material and overgrown everything, but hey snow makes everything pretty!) It's been crazy cold here. The kind of cold where when it snows it sticks. That doesn't happen often and as a result not many know how to drive. The streets are like little ice rinks. I did go out once today, when Bj took me to a dental check up. Now I'm huddled back inside. I did try to go outside to take pictures of my newest knitting:
Snow-5

(this is going to be baby leggings). Terrible picture, but I couldn't be bothered to stay out there one second longer to try and get it right. Brrrr! It's okay I've got other things to obsess about, like knob and handle placement. Currently we have this going on downstairs:
Knobs-1

So we decided to follow that formula (middle of the drawer, middle of the door) for the bathrooms and other built-ins:
Snow-2

Keith hard at work. I love this style. I'm so glad they still make them otherwise I would be well, a bit lost on what to do. I still have to find sconces to go in the bathrooms next to the (non-existent) mirrors. The ones we ordered (and paid for) were discontinued. I also have to think about window coverings, and soon. We should be living up here sometime next week. Which is awesome because I can't wait to get my rainbow clothes organization on:
Snow-3

I'll put out all the clothes I will be able to wear after the baby. Other wise I'd be able to fill about five hangers (and that's hanging t-shirts). Bj asked me today what I was going to wear to the dentist. Um, is there some other option besides yoga pants that I'm not aware of?

Crew girl fun times

Yesterday was our annual crew girl holiday party. Note to the casual reader: I call them crew girls because we were all on the Oregon State Crew team together (rowing). In addition to our evening festivities this year we had a joint baby shower for Tracy and I, who are due on the same day (we know!). I took no pictures of that event (of course, terrible Amber), but I do have a picture of the hostess with myself:
-4

Sciarrino and I are determined to get more pictures together! After hanging out at her place for a couple of hours and playing little games (like guess whose baby picture, which is so hard!) we went out to Mexican food for an early dinner. While there Settlemeyer got a dreaded citizen citation.

Picture-1

Ah hahaha. Turns out she did not do such a great job parking.

So we headed over to my place which I thought would either be a complete disaster (how I left the house to run out the door to the shower) or might be cleaned up a bit if Bj got my message. Turns out not only did Bj get the message but he rocked my world, putting away bits of wrapping paper and supplies that I left on the floor, cleaning the kitchen, vacuuming, putting the extra leaves in the table, and shopping for the supplies I was missing to make the super easy frosting. He is the best husband ever! I was going to have everyone over anyway to check out the remodel but I figured if it was a disaster we'd go back over to Sciarrino's. But we partied here. The girls were happy to let me show off the upstairs, which was fun because it is almost done! The we had our gift exchange. I ended up with a super soft blanket (stolen from another guest, hey that's the fun part). Then we got out the candy and made our houses.
-1

We all are actually pretty bad at this, despite years of practice.
-2

But of course that's not why we do it, at least that's what we tell ourselves. A few girls were missing, but they were in Hawaii and New Zealand, so we tried not to be too sad, except for the one who is in middle of nowhere Canada ๐Ÿ™‚ I have been getting lots of cute stuff by the way at these showers, I think once the room is painted and I can get it all out together I'll show you pictures. Let me just tempt you with this: Canadian rocking moose, that's right.

It was a great night and one I had to go to bed early to recover from. When I got up this morning there was snow on the ground. The only sensible thing to do was take a nice warm bath and knit (not at the same time, hmmm I should try that though). The snow cleared before I finished this:
-6

That's supposed to be the front.
-5

And that's supposed to be the back. I might switch it around though. I put details up on Ravelry.

Here is a conversation I had with Bj earlier this month:
Me: "oh my goodness look at these little hangers, they are just like our hangers only miniature!"
Bj: "uh huh."
Me: "oh Bj don't you think we need these, they are so so so so cute!"
Bj: "I think that's the last thing we need. Promise me you won't get those."
Me: "okay"

Here is a conversation we had today:
Bj: "that's so cute."
Me: "thanks I love how it turned out."
Bj: "but where did we get that?"
Me: "what?"
Bj: "that, the hanger."
Me: "that's one of our hangers" (bad lie since the sweater is only 8 inches across on the bottom)
Bj: "no that's a tiny hanger."
Me: "um onlyhangers.com"
Bj: silence

But really I think he's over it I mean look how cute they are! They are so cute! I also got ones with little clips on the bottom for miniature pants. Ah miniature pants how I love you. Oh and another funny comment I got today. Our builder came over so we could go over the list of things to get done before inspection. I showed him the sweater and he said, "you knit too, I thought you just bought and sold yarn." Haha, he was here when I got my Sundara and spazzed. Now what to knit next?

All I have to say is

Better-1

Ahhhh I feel so much better. I even waited yesterday to post about the fiasco hours after it happened and I was still so upset (as you might have read). This morning I had a talk with my builder and he was very apologetic and just wanted to make it right. I did end up letting him paint it. My mom came over as well and cleaned for 8 hours! If cleanliness is next to godliness surely she is an angel. Tomorrow I will get curtains back in the dining room, the table centered, put leaves in it and welcome my crew friends over for our annual holiday fun times. I can't wait. Thanks for all your lovely words, I definitely did have that break down coming, and I definitely did need that bath I took at my mom's this morning ๐Ÿ™‚

What finally broke me

Sometimes it's the little things and this afternoon I finally got the straw that broke my back.

I had been down in the basement working when the guys came to clean up (at 3:30, not a long enough work day if you ask me). I had gotten one of them to put a second coat on the new wall down there in one spot, despite them saying that it didn't need a second coat. People paint almost always needs a second coat if you want it to look good. So the guy goes to clean out the paint tray and there is tons of paint in it and I can't see that just go to waste so I said, "give it to me" and whipped out one of my brushes. I touched up a bunch of spots that have been DRIVING ME CRAZY. Yes, I know, I shouldn't be painting. I could not help it, there was no way I was letting that paint go down the drain. So I'm working away, everyone is gone, I clean up and head upstairs to pee before finishing up with my orders. I walk right into this:
Broke-1

Notice anything wrong with the bathroom? Besides being super messy? Ya, it's the wrong color. The cupboards and the wall are the same color. Now mind you the painter only had to hit up one wall and patch a small section, but what does he do? He paints the whole freaking thing (minus some still taped sections. Now I ask you, how the hell do you keep painting when it is quite clearly NOT the right color?
Paint-1

Oh and see that white section? Ya, I guess he just decided not to paint that at all. I was fuming at this point so I called the builder and was like, "this is so NOT COOL. He left it a mess, he painted it the wrong color." I had to explain why. To be fair I did give the painter the wrong color. I had a bit of the can of the old stuff and took it to the paint shop to get more. They saw the color code but not the bit underneath that said, "30% of colorbook" So I gave the painter the bit left over, told him to use it first and then the new. BUT STILL, come on, they are not even close!!!! So the builder says, "get new paint, we'll fix it tomorrow." Meanwhile I still haven't peed because I don't even want to deal with trying to clean this up.

So I start to sob, and sob, and sob, and sob some more. I call Bj and of course he doesn't answer his phone. But luckily my mom did, and though she could barely understand me until I calmed down (I was EXTREMELY worked up), she did manage to get out of me that it was a painting fiasco and said she would come tomorrow to help me. Which is awesome, because she paints so well (and not only is this painted the wrong color but it is done badly). So I called back up the builder and told him (I'll admit, through tears) that I didn't want the painter painting any more, my mom was going to do it. He said, no, no, he'd do it himself, but I refused, and told him I did not want them to paint. I want them to keep doing all the other stuff so we can get this remodel finished already (supposed to be done on Friday, so NOT going to be done).

I keep crying, because hey pregnancy hormones, why stop now? And head to the paint store, puffy faced. Luckily they know me in there, so not so horrible. I explained what they had done, and wouldn't you know it they made me a new gallon for free (I was still sniffling, so the odds were in my favor here). I picked up a large Frozen Coke from Burger King and drove the rest of the way home with it sitting on my belly wallowing. The crazy thing is I had been doing great. Just yesterday the doctor told me I was, "an above average pregnant woman with a very healthy baby that weighs about six pounds." Today I felt like a below average human being caught in some kind of experimental hidden camera show.

I did recover a bit when I got home and channeled my negative energy into a "I can do anything better than them anyway" mindset. I swept, followed that with vacuuming, and then actually got down on my hands and knees and scrubbed a big section of the Ribbon Jar floor. While I waited for all of that to dry I tore apart all the components on my desk, the cutting table, and under the ribbon racks; deep cleaned every morsel and put it back together. Then I got all the orders packed (I feel terrible but they were half done when I had to go to the paint store). I put covers on all the outlets and switches, and figured out how to get my phones plugged in again down there. Then when it was dry I got out the primmer and painted a section that my desk is supposed to sit on. I immediately cleaned up and got out of there (unfortunately unlike all the paint I'm using now, this is not low VOC).

I'm not even sure what the moral of this story is supposed to be. I mean we are going thousands of dollars over budget with this water heater fiasco, but this bathroom thing, man it did me in. And yes I had caffeine, and then inhaled paint fumes, and am probably the worst mother ever. At least I didn't try and climb on something to get the shower rod back up. So if you see me tomorrow with a three day old blow out, please give me a little pity. Hey I guess it's a good thing it will be a couple more days before I get a mirror back in the bathroom.
