Tutu @ 11 months

Turning eleven months has not been easy for my dear sweet Tuesday. Most of the day today she looked like this:

121009-1

Poor thing had the roughest night ever last night. For a grand total of two hours of alone sleeping, or really deep sleep. The rest was restless nursing, back patting, rocking, swaying and trying to keep her comfortable when she spiked a 102 temp. I don't know if it's the teeth, which continue to torture her, or a virus or something. Her fever is gone now and I've finally got her to sleep after two hours of trying. I'd like to remember her turning eleven months more like this:

120909-7
Yesterday morning I had the smart idea to have my camera all ready for when Tutu woke up as I find her still sleepy face quite cute:

120909-1
She happily obliged me and let me take some pictures of her goofiness:

120909-2
And mine I suppose.

At 11 months Tuesday is on the brink of walking. She can easily stand with no help, crouch down, pick things up, and get back up with toys in both her hands. However she still has not taken that first step and instead crawls with abandon:

120909-6

She is able to get to me very quickly now and it is funny to hear her do a fast crawl, especially on the hardwood downstairs, or when she has a toy in one hand.

120909-4
(her face is a little chapped from the cold, the house is very dry with the heat on constantly).

She is such a people person, loves to make everyone smile and will stare at someone for a while waiting for them to do so. She is starting to get shy around people though, mainly men. She prefers to be held by me or papa when around lots of people and will reach out for us. When lots of people are around she will crawl over to me and pull on my pant leg to be picked up. When she is upset she signs milk, I'm pretty sure she uses it for an all around, "mama I want you" signal, not just for her milky. She seems to prefer her right hand, the one that has the cutest little mark on it:

120909-5

I feel that she is so on the cusp of everything. The edge of babyhood, almost walking, babbling, grabbing, wanting… I just love the next phase that is coming. Exploring, making, doing. I know she will keep me guessing.

120909-8

Hopefully she will feel better soon so we can continue on with our adventures. I so love my little sparkle pants, even when I have to call my own mommy at 5:55 in the morning with a plea to come help me!

Hawaii day 6

Tutu continues her bout with teething. I continue my bout with not sleeping. But I wanted to share some more photos of my trip, before the spirit of Aloha completely gets replaced by the spirit of Christmas.

Ah good times. Now back to tutu, then maybe sleep? If you know me and you are likely to call tomorrow I would advice against any time before ten (mom that means you).

Night Time Baby

Sleep-1

Taken after the fifth waking tonight. Poor little sparkle pants is teething something terrible. It's only just midnight. No time for mama to do anything crafty. But I want to remember

Late nights just us, snuggled up and happy getting milky.

Coming to the crib, barely awake Tutu hardly making a sound, just lifting up her tiny arms for me.

The way she moves around before she falls asleep, finally putting one arm out to the side when she drifts off.

Patting her back and waiting for her breathing to slow down, signaling sleep.

Her little tiny soft hairs sticking up all silly and sometimes a bit sweaty.

The little sigh she gives as soon as she latches on… she takes a moment then starts gulping down milk.

When I pull back to get her off the breast she can do a crunch with super human strength to stay on, way to use those core muscles.

Her tiny sneezes… she just made some which means this tired mama will be running up the stairs once more.

Hawaii day 5

I’m glad I bought all those swimsuits… This is the first time she’s worn one! She loves the cold, wet Oregon coast, but beautiful hawaiin beaches? Not so much. The sand! The waves! The scary birds! And did we mention the sand? Blogging from the phone so more about today later.

Hawaii day 5

Hawaii day 4

Today we got a little bit of a later start, which was fine by me. Sciarrino, Tutu and I did some jewelry shopping in the lobby of our hotel. I will take pictures of it when I get home, it is all so cool. I was happy to find a neat souvenir that was locally made. We went over to Taro and Hanea's room to have my favorite breakfast. It's a mixed rice made with chicken, onion, carrot and ketchup with an omelet type of egg laid on top and then more ketchup, yummy! He also made bacon, Taro is the best! Sciarrino, Tuesday and I met up with an old crew friend mid-day in Macy's (I don't know if this is just on the island, but they were having 25% off everything!) where I finally found a flattering swimsuit. And it's a two piece. I need to lay out on the beach tomorrow and use it! We walked around for a while chatting and catching up, and getting a bite to eat at a local favorite: Duke's. The dinning room was open to the outdoors so birds came hopping over to troll around under Tuesday's highchair. Once she realized this she was like, "quick mom, save me!!!" We walked about a mile and a half to the aquarium, where I flipped Tuesday around in the stroller so I could push her up to the glass to see the fishes.

She really liked them. Fish!

I love all the colors of the fish, so spectacular. I also love how Tuesday uses the bar to pull herself up and get a better look:

After the indoor exhibit you go outside for a little bit. By this time Tuesday was getting a little tired so I put her in the Moby I'm borrowing from Donna and made her put on her sunglasses. Though she wasn't too happy about that she did manage to give Roz and Sciarrino a little smile:

Oh you can kind of see my new ring in this picture.

We walked back to the hotel to regroup and then headed out. Tuesday was so so close to asleep when we left our room but woke back up at the sight of everyone on the strip. By the time we had walked around for a bit she was starting to get super tired. I know a lost cause when I see one so I put her in the baby hawk and trekked the mile back to the hotel. She went down easily into the play pen – yeah! Of course she is still fully dressed, shoes and all. So I'm going to have to deal with that when she does wake up, but at least she is getting some rest now. With all the site seeing and shopping today I think I walked at least five miles, and over half of that in flip flops! Tomorrow I am determined to get in some swimming; either at the beach or the pool. I did go up to the pool this morning and and sat on a lounger to feed Tuesday, it was lovely. Hope you all are well, Bj tells me it is very cold at home. On the elevator a couple was lamenting about going home to minus 25 degree weather, now that is cold!

Hawaii days 1,2,3… or how quickly time flies in paradise!

As you saw we had an uneventful flight to Honolulu and landed midday here. We took a shuttle to our hotel, which took a while and only had a little time to freshen up and unpack before we got to meet up with Taro and his lovely bride, Hanea. They were so sweet and got a rental car with a baby seat in it for Tutu. Taro is all about good food and good company so we planned to cook the first night. I was all set to make potato corn chowder, something Taro remembered from living with me (all through college). I was afraid maybe it was built up a little too much in his head, but I cooked it with only a little change; adding some edemame and a little milk. It went over great and in addition to Sciarrino, Hanea, Taro and I his parents and brother, her parents and another college classmate of ours Rei, joined us. We couldn't stay the as late as everyone else because of the time change (they are two hours behind west coast time) and we were all tired.

The next day (yesterday) was the big day!

DSC_0013

(my photos might be a little wonky, I have a little computer here and I can't format them the way I usually do).

The wedding was all coordinated and we drove out to this beautiful chapel together in a van (I think their were 14 guests, or 14 guests and baby 🙂 The ceremony was mostly in Japanese, and hearing a lot of Japanese these last view days makes me wish I would have had Taro teach me more when we lived together. I took three years in high school, so some things sound familiar, but my working knowledge is like "excuse me" and some counting. Most of the day was the ceremony and pictures. I didn't get that many, because someone didn't like the grass:

DSC_0007

It was a little pokey. I have a feeling some better shots were taken (and hopefully a few more of this dress I made especially for the wedding):

DSC_0012

The paparazzi as the wedding planner was calling us. It was funny after a bit at the beginning she came over to Sciarrino and I and asked if we understood the Japanese, we're like, "um, no." So then she would come over and whisper directions to us in english after giving announcements. I told Taro I didn't think it was common for a couple of Americans to be hanging out with an all Japanese group like this one, and he agreed. Oh and speaking of cultural differences the cutest thing happened while we were waiting for the van. Sciarrino and I had walked from our hotel (about a mile), with Tutu in the stroller and I figured it would be best to feed her right before we joined the group. I had looked up online what the Japanese customs were on breastfeeding, not that I wouldn't do it, but to be respectful of their feelings, and the results I got from Google were not that positive. One of the comments I read said, "You wouldn't pull a penis out in public, so why is a breast ok?" OH MY GOD. So I was a bit weary of someone saying something to me. But the only place to feed her was on a pretty public bench in the middle of a shopping area because the waiting area for the van was too full of exhaust fumes. This young Japanese woman ended up sitting next to me and then her friend joined and realized I was feeding her (I'm pretty discrete, I think most people would guess she was asleep). She peeked down at Tutu and said, "kawaii!!!" (cute) and just very gingerly touched her hair. I was so happy she thought it was cute, and Tutu gave her a little milky smile. I hope that means attitudes are changing towards breastfeeding? Or maybe the sites I found were not really representative of the young Japanese?

Back to the run down. We came back to the hotel where I was able to get Tuesday to take a little rest (she also took a brief nap in the van on the way back). Then we were picked up for dinner at Ruth Chris. We had a private dining room for our party and I have to say it was probably one of the best meals of my life. Our fork was brought to us chilled for the salad, how cool is that? I'm totally doing that at my next dinner party. Taro presented us with gifts, which I'll take pictures of when we get back. Hanea had already given her guests theirs (this is a custom in Japan), and three of her friends are fellow flight attendants. When she told the table what she had gotten them they all stuck out their wrists at the same time to show off little gold chains. When they looked at Tutu earlier they all said, "Kawaii!!!" together at the same time. They are always in unison, it is so cute. Everyone was so sweet to Sciarrino and I, telling us what they were saying if someone told a joke or something in Japanese. And we were giving spots of honor at the head of the table by Taro, as was Rei, so it was great to catch up. When we first got to the restaurant I asked for a high chair and the waiter said he didn't know if Tuesday would fit, he'd never seen a baby so small in the chair (we are using disposable diapers here and she does look extra tiny, back to 3 month size pants!). When we left (over three hours later) he remarked how well she did. And although we didn't leave until well after ten and she did get a little vocal at times, she did do really well. Thanks to teething biscuits and lots of attention. I think I am going to have super strong arms after this trip, I am holding and juggling her constantly. It's nice to come back to the clean hotel room so she can crawl a little.

Today Taro, Rei, Sciarrino, Tuesday and I had our adventure day. The three other adults went for a run early this morning at 6:30, I was still trying to get a little sleep (oh that and I don't run). Then Sciarrino, Tutu and I had breakfast and met back up with the boys at ten. We headed to Diamond head to hike up the crater (750 feet high). Not a very tough walk, but I got quite winded with Tuesday in the Baby Hawk (I'm borrowing my friend's since mine has fuzzy inside), and hot muggy weather. We did it though:

IMG_0715

Sciarrino had very fair eyes so even with sunglasses it was hard for her to look at the camera. I picked mine up at the ABC store but they look pretty cute! Tuesday slept all the way up and back (maybe an hour and fifteen?). I had her fully covered, even with baby sunglasses on (promise to share a picture when I get them they were so cute!). Halfway up I got her head and feet (socks) wet and she stayed pretty cool the whole time. I was sweating something pretty bad though! I made Taro do the hang loose sign:

IMG_0719

I just felt such a sense of accomplishment doing this hike! I am so glad Tuesday and I go on so many walks, and while I may not look or weigh exactly what I did pre-pregnancy I feel very strong and fit. I'm sure the rest will catch up.

We stopped to pick up snorkel gear (not me) and then went to Hanalua (sp?) bay. Bj and I tried to go their with Carmen and Andrew last time we were in Hawaii, but it was full. The weather was a bit overcast by this time and there were not that many people, it was so nice and calm. While the three others went out with the gear I laid on a beach blanket and nursed Tutu to sleep. It was such a calm peaceful thing, I don't think I will ever forget it. I got a little time to knit and relax while she slept, but soon she was up and we were on the road again. After a bit of traffic and a few stops we were back at Taro's room (his has a kitchen) and cooking up nachos to watch the big game (Oregon State Beavers vs. Oregon Ducks in a civil war, the winner of which goes to the Rose Bowl. Taro, Rei, Sciarrino and I went to Oregon State). Tuesday and I couldn't make it to the end (no problem since it turns out they lost – Ceara I know, I know, go ahead and gloat). When we got down to the lobby I realized it was raining buckets. We made it back to the room, I got her to sleep and paid for this slow internet ($13.65 – it should be much faster) and here we are. Tomorrow Taro is cooking me one of my favorite breakfasts of all time. I don't know what it's called but it has egg, rice and lots of ketchup, yum!

Little Pixies

I finally finished the ties on William's pixie hat, just in time for the colder weather (well I guess a few weeks ago would have been just in time, but still there is lots of cold ahead). Tuesday and I had him and his mama over for lunch and then walked them back. I had to snap some pictures of the cutie.

Is he not just so so cute?

112409-2

And funny :)

Donna on pixie wrangling duty.

112409-8

I really like how the hat turned out with fine fingering weight (sock) yarn held double, but if I do that again I think I will just use smaller needles and a single bit of the yarn for the ties, they are quite thick. I told Donna if they don't work to give the hat back to me, they are just sewn on so it would be easy to pull them apart and do them over. Details are here.

112409-10

After we parted with William and Donna I called my mom to see if she could meet us at the park (she works nearby). She obliged and I was happy to get some good shots of her with tutu. And of course Tuesday was happy to swing, as always.

Tuesday is wearing a two piece outfit I knit for Violet back in the day, and of course her pixie

Some big girls (teenagers) were on the swings, Tuesday loved watching them.

Fall is probably my least favorite season (though to be fair they are all pretty close together in the running), but days like this have me rethinking my stance.

Now for something completely different we are headed to warm weather – Hawaii baby! A dear friend of mine, Taro is getting married Wednesday and I wouldn't miss it for the world, even if it does mean Tuesday and I are setting off with out papa again. Auntie Sciarrino is going to accompany us, and I have enough stuff packed that we could stay a month, though we'll be back next week. I'm planning on blogging from the island!

Everyone needs purple pants

Don't you think? I started knitting this up a while ago, it's a great mindless knit if you do it on two needles, because you don't need to keep track of the legs being even:

111809-1

These are the same pattern as the little green ones I knit last year, but I didn't decrease all the way for the legs, instead I kept them nice and wide.

112309-2

I also made them really long, so we can roll up the cuff now, and let it out later:

112309-6

She is wearing these with Hanna socks, our favorite.

112309-1

I ended up switching this sparkly ribbon for a softer herringbone, and I think it's going to work just as well as the i-cord I made last time. I really like them, but I might be over making a pair of pants with size two needles for the little one. I think I'm going to move up to some heavier weight stuff and might even try to make some as soakers. I've been email Carla at More Than One Way To Knit a Hat and it doesn't seem so confusing to me now.

One more picture, just because it looks like she's doing a little hip thing here and I find that hilarious! Plus you can see the beautiful Sundara sock yarn. Mmm so pretty.

Okay I totally cut and pasted that from my newsletter (and took the picture from my mom, mmm I love that new crushed velvet). I am super tired today, because I stayed up late working on it, but also because our fire alarm (which is now hard wired, so it goes off in three places) went off at 3:30 in the morning, and we have no idea why. Like Bj said, "Maybe the sleep gods are against us."
