Up in the Clouds

I know heaven isn’t really up in the clouds, but I’d like to believe my grandmother’s soul is floating somewhere, interacting with other cool people and being happy. She passed away in her sleep last night, and was just barely 76. I’m so sad. My grandfather passed away almost four years ago, and after that my grandmother just degraded really fast. She had a kind of dementia and it was sort of like Alzheimer’s, only we don’t know if she didn’t know who we were or just couldn’t tell us because she stopped talking. I feel horrible for this but my grandmother’s birthday party was Tuesday and I didn’t go. I just forgot. My dad told me about it on Sunday at Brent’s graduation but I still didn’t remember. And now she’s dead and I can’t ever see her again. And that makes me more sad. But my mom made me feel a little better by telling me that if God really had wanted that to be my last memory of grandmother I would have remembered. So I was thinking of her all day and here are some cool things about her:

*This is me and my cousin Dustin at my grandparent’s Cali casa. Whenever we were down there grandmother always made sure there were lots of oranges so we could make fresh squeezed juice every morning.
*My grandmother had the same pink nail polish ever since I can remember. My girlfriend and I were down at the desert for spring break and went to paint our nails. We wanted to take it off and went into grandmother’s bathroom but all we saw were three bottles of pink polish and no remover. When I asked my grandmother for some she asked why she would need it. 🙂
*My grandmother and grandfather were quite the socialites. I love this article from our local paper:

*I was the first one to actually graduate from Oregon State, I’m sure that made my grandfather and grandmother proud. I know they were excited when I got in.
*I read my grandmother’s high school yearbook back when there was only one high school in Salem (now there are six). My grandfather signed a bunch but my favorite thing he said was, “I hope and I am sure you will be around to share my millions.”
*Grandmother took me and a girlfriend to Palm Springs to walk down El Paseo street at night and look at all the shops. Even though they were way too big she let us borrow fur coats to wear so we looked fancy.
*Grandmother made little hotcakes for breakfast that were quite famous in our family. I believe my cousin Ryan holds the record for the most eaten in one morning at 47 or something ridiculous. I always ate them with butter and sugar. {Note: Brent thinks this number is lower, who remembers?}
*Grandmother tried the Atkin’s diet before it was popular. My friend Brooke and I were visiting and she made an avocado salad that consisted of half an avocado, mayonnaise, and bacon. It was so gross.
*Grandmother though her gravy was the best at Thanksgiving because we all slathered it on our turkey and it almost always ran out. But the truth was every year she got up earlier and earlier to start the turkey and it was SO DRY!!
*My grandmother made each of her five grandchildren a scrapbook with really funny captions and I think it is one of the things that made me want to scrapbook!
*I don’t know why but you couldn’t call grandmother and grandfather grandma and grandpa, only my older cousin Dustin occasionally got away with calling her grams.
*Grandmother and grandfather loved stuff from Mexico and had tons of artwork from there in their living room. They did not “get” my abstract stuff, but appreciated me for being creative.

I’m so thankful for my grandparents and what time I did get to spend with them. I really miss our whole family getting together. After my grandfather’s death we never did another holiday together. And now all the grandchildren are out of school and all over. I am looking forwards to seeing my cousins at the funeral on Tuesday because I miss them a lot. My grandparents were really good to us grandchildren. Because of the trust fund they set up for me I was able to start the Ribbon Jar and I know they would be really proud of me because they were entrepreneurs and always getting into a new venture.

And if I die before I wake, I pray the lord my soul to take.

It’s back – Free Association Wednesday

Okay so free association is back, I’m on the ball people. Just comment with the first thing that pops into your head when you see this word, no real thinking required. If you need help see the first free association Wednesday, and please comment because my mom thinks I have no more blog reading friends left!

Get Creative or Get Crazy

Okay seriously I was not ever meant to have a clean room. My room has been extremely clean for the past couple of days, and I hate it. I like don’t want to do anything because I know I will mess it up. I so want to be a real grown up and not live in one room. What I mean is my room is my studio, bedroom, closet, writing desk, phone booth, cinema, portal to the world, computer room, oh and did I mention studio?  If there is one thing I can say I have constantly wanted since my conception I would say it is a studio. I wish I could find all these drawings I used to do of huge gigantic tree forts with two level studios and immense pulley systems, because that would be a good visual. Hmm, maybe I’ll draw one later…. The updated version of this is an ginormous loft that has one whole wall windows, floor to ceiling, and one whole wall of storage, floor to ceiling. It also needs to have: easel, wood floors (slightly unfinished with wider boards), a couple cool wooden rolling carts, excellent stereo system*, printing press (with at least an 18×36 inch bed), two drafting tables*, glass table, fume hood, hazardous waste disposal system, big metal sink with large counter, mat cutter*, precision paper cutter, super good lighting for night time work (and blinds for those huge windows because that would be scary at night, please see this post as to why), computer station*, Epson 2200*, good set of tools (all varieties, preferably including wood-shop set up), spiral staircase to a rooftop space, and a Slurpee machine.
Now I do not think that is too much to ask! Well okay maybe a little. But why am I on this rant?  Oh ya, my freaking room!!! I love my room, it’s so cool, it’s a loft and I have a window seat and the ceiling is like way high (I can jump on my bunk bed for God’s sake), but I would like some separation of church and state, or in this case, creative and other. Well I guess if I had the loft mentioned above I could sleep in there too, so maybe just more space? Blah blah blah. What I was going to start off saying by the title of this post is how I am not being very creative, and it sort of makes me go insane. I have been scapbooking, but for me that is just not enough. I really long for some serious press time, I am itching to get my hands dirty with ink, pastels, paint, anything!! I can’t see this situation being resolved in the near future unless I win the lottery or rob a bank (which, by the way, I would never do). And also when I go on all night creative binges I don’t think I need to work out because I expend a lot of energy, and you know how I hate working out, and if you don’t know, I HATE IT!!

Okay here are a couple of layouts, just because I want to prove I do some stuff besides Ribbon Jar (but I am like obsessed with it and feel like I am letting it down when I work on anything else, oh speaking of which I got some cool vintage ribbons, check em)

I love this one because of the not so technically wonderful, but wonderful for every other reason photos: our feet in the sandals we had to wear, us being blown to bits under the falls, my head next to the water, and bj posing with his pink bracelet. Also I supplemented our photos with postcards, which I am obsessed with (I just cleaned out my collection, people who know me, you will be getting random postcards soon).

This is a scraplift from Denise Pauley Creating Keepsakes May 2005, pg. 93). Tearing apart all my magazines really made me want to use some of the ideas and this sketch was great since I had a ton of pamphlets and stuff to include.

Okay if you want a laugh click on this to blow it up and check out my gigantic nostril as I scream for my life on the log ride. Bj’s just laughing away, but in my defense we didn’t have any kind of restraint device and it was hella scary! This layout is so so, but I have a huge tupperware from the trip I am trying to get through (we’re talking 17lbs or so of memorabilia people). Oh but I do like the stamped mustard moon paper for the date, if anyone else wants to try this the dauber duds are the perfect size for a bingo stamper look.
Carwash
I didn’t do this one that recently, but I love it! I think Bj is like the cutest car washer ever (ya, I know I have an obsession with taking pictures of him washing cars, I can’t help it).

I guess I should do a little background because I don’t know if I have on this blog or what, but Bj and I went on a 10,548 mile road trip last summer as our graduation present to ourselves. Scrapping this is as big as adventure as going on the trip, but you know what? Even not all that wonderful pages are more interesting for people to look at then a slide show. It’s cool because if they want to read the journaling they can, and all the crap pictures are edited out for them. I would say to any one going on a big trip: 1) keep a really good journal and 2) instead of scrapping in order make a cool calender of events for the beginning of the book and then just to what ever you like, that way people can tell when you went where but you can work on what ever you want.

For all of those you can click on them to see them bigger.

*I do have a few things already (but no where to use/put them)
good pastel collection
stereo system that is good enough
1 drafting table
good computer set up
Bj has a 2200, but I can not work it on my own, I get yucky prints every time I try
mat cutter

Congratulations Grads!!!

Today was all about the graduates! My younger brother Brent, and roommate and best buddy Sciarrino graduated today! I spent the day getting burnt (way hotter than it was supposed to be).

The cute little puppy that was sitting behind us (grad gift from a mom to her son).

All the graduates stand.

The heat finally makes Bj crack.

Me with the crazy brother!

Best buds Bj and Brent.
After the ceremony we drove to Salem and had a loud fun dinner. Tomorrow I am going to buy some aloe.

Pigs baby, flying pigs!!

Okay so I have a bunch of these little dime store pigs that I got in Maine. A couple of years ago I started an art project that has been a lot of fun for me. I’ve been placing these little pigs all over, just hidden here and there for someone to find. It’s a kind of an instillation/interactive art piece. I left one by the world’s largest thermometer last summer. I scrapbooked it and used it as part of my HOF entry:

So then I was at Border’s a few days ago and i found this:
Pigs
It uses the same pigs that I use for my project! How sick is this, LOLOLOLOL, and it flings them pretty good too. It was either this or a boss fling-er, hehehe. But since I am my own boss I thought it would be funnier to fling my pigs, and baby is it ever!

Um…

Okay so I just got this Backstreet Boys song with my Slurpee deal, does that make me a slave to pop culture. I just couldnt’ help myself!!!!

Yeah!!! If you love Slurpees and you love iTunes then you should so go get a slurpee because you get a free iTunes song. Well I like to look at it like you are buying an iTunes song and then getting a Slurpee for 36 cents, and baby you can’t beat that!

Okay so I forgot free association Wednesday again, but I’m going to try to be better next week. Swear. Yesterday I was at the dentist. My dentist has too good a personality to be a dentist, I think. Because see, dentists are not supposed to make you laugh while you have a dental dam in your mouth, but mine did. I had never had one of these in my mouth before, and I started cracking up while he was putting it on me, then he had to drive the point home by holding up a mirror in front of me so I could see my face covered by a huge piece of blue latex with just the teeth sticking out. I mean I almost gagged on my spit people. Anyway I told him that I thought he could make a little extra money on the side by getting a foot masseuse in there while you get your teeth worked on. Okay because he already has like the most comfortable chairs ever (I bring my iPod and just chill in there), and he is like super good with the shots when you have to get numbed up, but I think this would make his place the best ever. He said my boyfriend could come rub my feet while I got worked on next time, but I don’t think Bj would go for that. So that was pretty much my day. I stopped at my mom’s to say hi but didn’t even get a chance to swim because I was putting in lots of yummy double sided ribbon into the Ribbon Jar. Oh, and if you get a free song I think you should get this one (Sciarrino this is a clue to your graduation present, hehehe).

Oh, no, I’m it!

Okay so Amber (and yes Amber I do ship internationally) tagged me. I don’t really know what to do, so I hope I do it right. I guess I am supposed to put the answer of the question in Google and link the first thing that comes up (but I’m such a cheater, if something better is like second or third I am so choosing that!).  Okay well here goes:

Ribbon Mania

Okay watch your emails people, my first newsletter for the Ribbon Jar is going out very soon. I worked on that today, and putting in a lot of new product into the system. I got some super sweet and sick stuff that I can’t wait to play with it tomorrow, but I’m expecting a bunch more stuff so I’ll see if I have time. You have to check out this, my absolute favorite thing that came today {Indian silk ribbon}, I’ve never seen anything like it, and it’s even better than I thought they would be. Anyway here is the yumminess from today:
