sad to happy

Well yesterday was a pretty rough day for me. My great grandmother died on New Year’s day and yesterday was the funeral and wake. When I was born I had seven great grandparents, and she was the last surviving one. Marie was 93 years old when she went up to heaven. I was so lucky that I got to see her on Christmas Eve. She had just gotten sick that day really, a gall bladder thing. I was sad when I went to see her because she really wasn’t feeling well and she was moaning and in a lot of pain. But you know the amazing thing? Her mind was all there, and I am just so thankful that we could have one last conversation. I showed her my knitting because she was one crafty lady and I knew she would appreciate it, and she did. I asked her if she wanted a new Kleenex because she was wiping her mouth, and she was like, "oh no, those don’t hold up nearly as well as my handkerchiefs." I don’t know why but I love that. My mom and I always have handkerchiefs with us too and I had one at the funeral, holding it I was thinking of her.
Before my great grandpa died and she still lived on their farm she would cook us these huge dinners (which of course was lunch, because supper was a smaller meal in the evening). There would always be a pie or desert and some salads, and meat. I remember when I was younger eating this meat and thinking, "what is this" then my grandma said, "do you like the tongue"? Ahhhhhh!!!!! My great grandparents were "rock hounds" before it was illegal to just take any rock or fossil you wanted. They travel all over with rock clubs (hehehe) digging them up, and then polishing them. This was so cool to my younger self. My great grandma kept crafting up until the end. I hope I can be like that. She made a ball out of granny squares for her great-great-grandson (my cousin’s boy Matthew who is five). And Krissy said he wanted to bring all the things she made him to the funeral. She made him leave it then all in the car where the ball was buckled in with a seat belt. He was playing with the ball at the wake, and it just reinforced how much things made with love really mean. I’m sure he’ll have that ball forever. I still have the mini crochet Barbie outfits, and stuffed turtles, baby blankets, and homemade slippers. My mom and I think we got all our crafty skills from grandma and I’m sure we did. She painted, sewed, knitted, crocheted, cooked, never forgot a birthday, loved everyone, and everyone loved her.
So the funeral. It was in this super old cemetery. I mean they must have gotten their plots many years ago, because I said to my cousin, "doesn’t it look like grandma got the last empty spot?" And it was so strange because when they picked out this final resting place I’m sure it was in the country, but now it is smack in the middle of a development. Like, houses surrounding the whole thing, very interesting. Then we went to the wake. My cousin Jenny is pregnant, I asked her how she was doing and she said, "barf-a-rama man, it’s nasty" poor Jenny. I said maybe when she has her second baby we’ll be pregnant together, and she was like, "after this man, I don’t know." After that we drove by my great grandparent’s old farm (I didn’t take pictures, oops). The new owners took down the swing set that we all played on since we were little, even my mom and her brothers and sisters. They also cut down some big old trees, we thought it looked pretty bare. When we got home I was having a ton of trouble with the Ribbon Jar and I just got so overwhelmed. I started to cry and I told my mom, it’s just so hard, because if I had a "normal" job, I could just take the whole day off, but I can’t because no one can do all the stuff but me. Bj’s been in Minnesota and I just need him. Being the sweetheart that he is he drove down to Salem after he landed at PDX, even though his plan was late and he didn’t get here until two. He had to leave early this morning but those few hours of sleep with him just brought me peace.

Today was much better, calmer, and I got a lot done. Check out the new products section. Plus I’ll update later tonight with pictures, but this post has been long enough as it is.

Creative Stuff

Worked on this Simple Scrapbooks planner last night. There is a class going on over at Big Picture Scrapbooking, and this was their first assignment. I still haven’t decided if I want to take the class or not since it is a little spendy. But I bought the planner when it was on sale so I thought I should decorate it. You can see the cover and details here at 2 peas. Hmm, this looks way cooler in real life, just trust me k?

This morning I spent most of my time taking down Christmas lights. I’ve been working on Ribbon Jar stuff all day, soon you will see an updated ideas page and new ribbon! I have to say if you haven’t read the responses to today’s free association you really should. Kay, your man is so funny!  And Becca, I think I would have laughed at that girl, fushia and royal blue, ew!!! I love seeing what you guys come up with for this game.

I’ve been busy

Okay so I finally put together a photo album I’ve been wanting to do since I started blogging. This is a my peeps album. All the people I talk about. So you can have a nice visual reference. Check it out over on the side bar. I’ve listed who they, relation to me, and perhaps an interesting fact or two. There are definitely some missing links, and if that’s you watch out because I’m going to find some old funny picture of you and scan it in. I did do some other things today, mostly listing a bunch of stuff on eBay. If you’ve had your eye on my wondrous Coach bag, now is your chance. I need the money more than the bag, so up it goes. Also a dressy suit skirt combo that I thought I would wear to interviews and stuff, but turns out I got hired no problem. My bridesmaid dress is up there, and the Nikon lens that came in the kit for my D50, I already had one, so this ones up on the block. I’m going to list some more stuff tomorrow so check it. I’ll leave you with this:

Camera + Horoscope = good

I love my horoscope widget:
“…Build lots of wiggle room and plenty of options into your schedule – and allow for random, unexpected greatness. If you can be ready to go with the flow it can take you to some pretty tremendous places now. And if you can take a risk at the right moment you can be rewarded in some pretty tremendous ways.” That’s awesome!

Okay so what have I been up to?  Well knitting a second pair of gloves for Taylor, and playing with my Christmas goodies: whitening my teeth with go smile, making myself feel pretty in some new bras, drooling over new knitting patterns, slathering myself with my favorite lotion, munching on my favorite sweets, and lounging in new pj’s.

Plus I got a camera, that’s right, a camera. Here’s the thing. I got that digital camera a while ago, as you may  remember. It only cost like 100 bucks and I just wanted it to swing around in my purse, but I got addicted to the digital format and found myself pulling out my Nikon N65 less and less. I’m sure my photography professor would scream if he saw how much I was pointing and shooting. So I was looking into a new body that I could use all my lenses with, and accessories. Well I really wanted the D200, but come one, that is way out of my range. So I was walking the mall after Christmas and Shutterbug had a deal on a D50 kit. I already had the lens that came with it, but even with that the package was cheaper than the body normally costs. So I got it! I pooled my Christmas money and am returning some boots (that I did ask for, yes, in bright orange, I thought they would look good on me, um, they don’t) so I can afford it. I love my camera, it’s so similar to the N65 that it’s really easier for me to work with. All my lenses work with it, and my remote even! Went outside with Scully and took some pictures today:

Okay well, that sucks. I shot this in raw, and it also takes a jpeg, the jpeg is what I can put on here, and it’s no where near the raw image.  The raw file of this photo just blows me away with it’s color and clarity. Hmm, I’ll have to figure out how to do that, but I have it optimized for on screen editing and printing. I’m going to play with it more this weekend with Bj. Maybe whale watching, the Japanese gardens, we haven’t decided yet. I’ll figure out how to get good pictures for you though!

Show and Tell part 3

Some more gifts I’ve been working on. This lap quilt for my mom. I loved the coin quilt Hillary did over at Wee Wonderful’s. This was hard just because we are always together!

I’m glad he liked them so much. I also made his mom a scrapbook of our Alaska trip and she liked it so much she cried!!! I felt so super happy that everyone liked their handmade gifts. I’m working on a pair of these for my little brother Taylor as we speak.

Here’s up close of one of the gloves:

And finally the hugest of projects was refinishing this ginormous chopping block for Bj. I got it at a yard sale for $15 dollars a couple years ago and it was covered in grim, and had been over oiled. Bill helped me get the feet off, and then I had it sanded front and back on an industrial belt sander. I scraped the sides, sanded them, and also sanded the feet. Then I put the feet back on and bleached the whole thing. I oiled it and there you go. One of these in stores would be like $250 so I’m really proud of this find. It’s huge, like 17″ by 26″ I’ll have to take a picture of it tonight on Bj’s counter!

Show and Tell part 2

I finished two major projects yesterday, as well as Christmas stockings for my step-brother and boyfriend:

They were pretty easy once my mom explained to me how the fuzz had to be sewn on. This is the first thing I’ve ever done that was lined, yay! Bits of that red fur are everywhere though. And this came yesterday from eBay:

I had no idea it was so big. It’s’ three levels high and almost two feet high! The stamps say the coolest things: “please rush” “certified hand carried” “Please sign” and lots of other cool things. I got some doubles so I’ll have to give them out to my readers after Christmas. Oh, and I’m still on the look out for “first class” one, so if anyone sees one, give me a holler! Merry Christmas!!
