How do you do that?

I have a bunch of emails to answer, so if some are yours sorry! One of the emails I got was a request to go over how you spin yarn. Sure! Now just remember I’m no expert, I’ve taken a few lessons, but I still feel like I only know the basics. So basically you need a fiber and something to spin it with. I use a wheel, but there are also drop spindles, cheaper, but they look like it might take a herculean amount of hand eye coordination to figure out. I think that might be a personal problem on my part though :). So the fiber. If you go out and get some fiber straight from the sheep (or other animal) than you’ll need to clean it and line it up right (a hand or drum carder is used for this). Then you can dye it if you want (you can actually dye it before or after you line it up). Now I tried all of this, and sure you save a little bit of money going this route, but dude it’s messy and time consuming. What I have found more fun is buying super cool dyed commercial top (commercial top is all lined up right and so soft and perfect, spinning it is a breeze), like this:
Hello_yarn_maldives

So then you spin it up. Now I’m only telling you this next part because I can’t be the only person who knew so little about spinning before I tried it. I thought that the fiber went through the wheel somehow and I don’t know made yarn. But what the wheel really does is spin around once and make the flyer (the part on top) spin around in multiples, so like on the largest band the flyer will go around say four times for every once around the wheel goes, and on the little one maybe eleven times. I totally made those numbers up though, because I never count and see what it’s on I just feel for it. You can tell if it’s going to fast because you won’t be able to keep up and it will twist out of control.

A piece of leader is hooked to the bobbin, and your fiber is drafted on to that. Since the bobbin goes around and around, it starts twisting what is hooked to it (the fiber). If you just held your hand still and never let go it was just twist until it was one big twisty mess. Because it’s hard at the beginning to know how much fiber to let out this is a common first problem. The extra twisty-ness. But okay see that fluffy part up there? You want to let just enough of that in to get the right amount of twist at the right amount of thickness before it gets too twisty. It’s one of those pat your self on the head, rub your belly kind of things I think, but the first time you get it, you WILL feel like the smartest person on earth and you won’t believe you’re making yarn (well if you’re anything like me at least). So then you have a single, one single strand of fiber spun up:
Single

You can try and knit this (you’ll have to set the twist first, I’ll get to that), but I never have because I wasn’t very good at controlling the amount of the fluffy stuff that gets drafted so I’d have some real weak spots, and the singles couldn’t stand alone as yarn. That bit of single up there I thought could because I’ve gotten loads better since I started. But most likely you are going to ply at least two strands together. Since I spin my singles with the wheel going clockwise I have to ply with it going to other way so I don’t mess everything up. So instead of putting just fiber on the leader, now I tie the two different bobbin strands I"m going to ply together to it and start treadling the other way (that’s what it’s called when you push the peddles). I got a bigger head for this at OFFF because I was always having to cut my skeins in half and it was annoying:
2_heads

I’m telling you this because if you’re really interested than you should know these things exist, they hold a ton of yarn and are genius! Love it. So there you go you twisted to singles together and you have a 2 ply yarn! You need to soak it (in cool water and don’t agitate it because you’ll get felt):
Soak

The books say you can wash it, but I don’t, just soak. Then you hang it up to dry (or use your awesome

Yarn, can you believe it? And there are other ways to ply. Like if you just have one bobbin you can do this thing called Navajo plying, it’s cool. I just tried it for the first time. It’s a cool way to make stripped yarn:
Navajo

There are tons of awesome handspun yarn examples on flickr. Hello Yarn is an awesome blog, and her shop is great too.  There are wonderful hand-dyed rovings on etsy (and handspun yarn if you want to skip all the above steps). I get to go to Woodland Woolworks because I live close enough, but they have a great catalog/online shop. Sign up for the catalogs because they are like free reference books for spinning and yarn.  It’s so great to take private lessons, honestly the class I took was crap. Maybe you’ll find better where you live, but one on one was what I needed to "get it."  Any other questions?

Today I got to spend the whole day with my mother, which was so great. We shopped, met my grandma, and got to see my new baby cousin!

They let me take a bunch of photos, that
was my fav.

My uncle is my mom’s youngest brother. I’m almost certain this will be my last new cousin. Our youngest little member to the party.

A very happy addition to our family. Welcome little Elaina Ann!

Oregon Flock and Fiber Festival

Today I went to the Oregon Flock and Fiber Festival. I totally stocked up on Fiber (huge shock I know). I updated my Flickr with all of it so check it out if you like. My favorite:
Offf_07_4
I’m really interested to see how it spins up. That’s a pound of fiber for $17, whoo hoo!

I also got to see lots of fiber producing animals, including a camel! I don’t think I’ve ever seen one before. Maybe? But I never remember petting one, and they are surprisingly soft:
Camel

Cute, huh? Then I caught this sheep in a crazy kind of yawn. LOL!

(it’s faded in the front from the bar on the pen). So now I’m off to spin, spin, spin.

Flickr me this…

For my birthday Bj got me a flickr pro account. I’ve had a regular account for a while, but had not gone beyond adding a few images to my favorites. Today I decided to take the plunge and put in the little code and sign up. I did it because while visiting Shell’s photo stream I saw that she had taken pictures of her stash for Ravelry. Turns out you have to host the pictures somewhere other than Ravelry. Now I don’t have my invite yet (6,393 ahead of me at last check), but I’ve been dreaming of the stash organizational feature. Plus going to Oregon Flock and Fiber Festival tomorrow I thought I should get a real handle on my yarn/fiber situation. This meant dragging it all out of storage and up to the deck to take pictures. This also meant that Bj gets to see my whole stash all together, yikes! And he’s still letting me go to O.F.F.F., yeah! So they are all uploaded to my flickr page now, a yarn stash set and a fiber stash set, check them out! Here are some of my favorites.
Stash_67

Now this is bad: I have been wanting some of this for a while, and forgot I HAD SOME ALREADY. I got it right before the wedding thinking I was going to edge

All the Noro’s look great. When I first started stashing yarn away I thought I would knit it all up immediately after purchase so I wound a lot of it into center pulls before I had an idea of what I was going to do with it. I would not suggest this and many of the tags slipped out from their centers.
Stash_14

Ah Manos I love you! Okay so I have a lot of yarn, yes I do. I think next time I take pictures I’ll do it inside with controlled lighting, as I did all of these on manual, and for some reason my meter tends to read low, so I had to correct almost all of these, not sure what I’m doing wrong there.

Yes, I’m headed out to Oregon Flock and Fiber Festival tomorrow (Saturday) I think mid-morning, early afternoon. I don’t have a buddy to go with as my neighbor had a family emergency, so I will be alone with my camera and credit card. If you see me please say hello! I really, really, really want to meet some new knitting/crafting buddies.

*edited to add: I can’t stop! I uploaded all my Alaskan Highway pictures too, check them out here.

The Library Rocks!

Today was kind of a slow day for me, as in I moved so slow. I went to visit with grandpa and picked us up the usual, a frozen coke for me and chocolate shake for him, so that caffeine helped a little. Grandpa was in a kind of mood today that drives me crazy. Luckily I got to hang out with Sciarrino tonight and vent so you won’t get the brunt of it here because she did (love you Sciarrin!). Basically we got to talking about Halloween because I got that cool new Martha Stewart special (the one with two covers) when I was grocery shopping for him. He was telling me about what a stupid thing Halloween is, and how it’s such a waste of time to make costumes (I hope you’re not reading this Erika!). He thought the cute little girl in the snow princess costume looked, "satanic" (which is really ironic considering he’s an atheist so what does he care…). I was like, "but grandpa didn’t Billy dress up?" (Bj’s dad) "No, waste of time, we didn’t do that kind of thing." "Well what did Billy do?" "Write on people’s windows with soap… later with candles then it doesn’t come off." Okay… Then he started dissing his own sister! Telling me how ugly she was, and how their own dad was like, "good riddance" when she got married at 16. I was so shocked, "Grandpa," I said, "Don’t say things like that about you’re sister it’s so mean!" "It’s not mean, it’s true, I’m only telling the truth." Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I think to myself, okay I think it’s been a hour and grandpa needs to rest. "Grandpa I’m going to go so you can get some rest." "All I do all day is rest." "Love you! Bye!"

Grandpa can be hilarious, and so kind, and I think deep down he is a really good person, but he’s definitely not the world’s biggest optimist. Sometimes I wish I was going to meet one of the cute old ladies with too much red lipstick and they were going to teach me how to do argyle knitting. But then I think I’m probably learning a lot more than I realize right now, like patience, I’ve always had a terrible time with that, and I think I might just be getting a good lesson in that right now!

Luckily Bj can somehow know what I’m thinking and make it all better by simply signing an email off, "love ya my darling wife!" and suggesting I go to the library when I can’t get the book I want at Borders. I had to call him back after my 45 minute reconnection with myself inside that wonderful building and tell him he was a genius. I have these like mental blackouts where I forget the library even exists (usually coinciding with some over due charges). Then I go there and I’m blown away all over again. I got every book I wanted, and then some, got help from the sweetest librarian ever, and used my iPhone to pull up my amazon wish list and "shop" from it, awesome! I also got some things not on my list. Check.This.Out.
Skirt

Barbra Walker I hail to you. I must make this skirt. Sciarrino said, "But it looks heavy like a blanket." Exactly my friends, exactly. Now for the girl (me) who wore a skirt, knee high Uggs, thick top, tights, and a down jacket in todays "freezing" 68 degree weather (brrr). Okay by the way I need to seriously increase my tiny stash of tights and knee highs, so any good links, pass them on please!

I left the library feeling very good indeed, to come home to a tiny package with this in it:
So_tiny

Awe! I think I might keep this in my handbag, for when random dymo needs come up! It’s only four inches long! Then I went to hang out at Sciarrino’s new place, the bag making factory:
Factory

Ohhh that’s some of the

It’s an Amy Butler pattern, but I forget which, Sciarrino? So now I must sew something, very inspired I am. Off to spin, goodnight!

Spinning for actual knitting

Last night I was rocking the baby surprise sweater…
Slubby

So I started doing a ply of this awesome Maisy Day Merino. When you first start to spin your yarn is really slubby, full of thick and thin places, but at no real set intervals, couple that with insane twist problems and it can make for some crazy yarn. So I’ve gotten a lot better at making nice even thin singles. But I can’t seem to make even thick singles. So I reverted a bit and went for this thick and thin. I’m going to bring it with me to the festival and find something else to ply it with (to stretch out this batch since I only have 8 ounces, about four of these bobbins worth). Should give me enough for…? I don’t actually know so I’m off to Borders tomorrow to get Spin to Knit (coupon, yeah!). I’m going to figure out how much fiber it takes to do a big project and I’m going to go to the festival with a plan! Don’t worry I’ll show you all the spoils :). Now if only I didn’t have to do pesky book keeping catch up during the day…

Siblings

If you would have told me ten years ago that I would love my step siblings so much I would have said, "You’re crazy!" But they really grew on me. I have three step brothers, one my age, one older, and just turned 17 year old Taylor. Taylor works at the local grocery. He recently told me that he was going to start being the sign boy on Tuesday nights. Your mistake Taylor. You know I couldn’t pass that up!
Emilie

Mmmm fresh made cookie dough and milk. Heheheh. Hey I did get her a frozen coke and onion rings after school! Good thing my dad never reads the blog! Anyway these two are a year apart, and growing up way to fast, but at least into really great people.

And thanks for all the comments on my last post. I’m keeping it random, and I’m keeping it real! 🙂

Random Monday

Let’s start with some grandpa randomness. This evening when Bj and I went over to visit (had to bring him a chocolate milkshake, we’re trying to bulk him up), we got on the subject of email. He wanted to know how it worked and what it was. We were talking about it and I told him that I emailed back and forth with Kay, a friend from camp all the way over in England. He was impressed, but then we got the question we always get, "And how much did that cost you." We both replied, "nothing." He could not believe it. "No," he said, "if that was so why have phones any more?" Hehehe, I still don’t think he quite gets the concept. I told him I’d print one off and bring it over tomorrow. Oh and another grandpa thing? I think we should all add back in, "and how," to our vocab. He said it tonight and I couldn’t think of the last time I’d heard it used (besides Disney movies of course).

On with the randomness. I played a lot with my camera/flash so I’ll let my photos do the talking (and I’ll subtitle).
Lunch

Since my day doesn’t really start until lunch, god I am so useless and lazy until noon, true story.
Slippers

Down to the "lower level" I don’t think I’ll ever get over the sick ill coolness of the floor. I do have to repaint a section already as it didn’t stick in one spot, but still. First day of the fall wearing my heavy duty slippers, it’s cold!
Tacky

On Bj’s desk. A couple years ago when I visited Ceara we decided to find the tackiest thing to bring Bj home. She won.
With_ring

Bj serenades me, swoon, I’m so lucky.
Eyelashes

sooo lucky. Love him.
Baby_clothes

Michele gave me a ton of V’s old stuff. We went through it all to save these away. Ah I get so distracted by baby clothes, I think I might have to get a doll to dress up since a baby is a long ways away.
Baby_surprise

So of course I have to take a break from the mitered squares blanket and start up a baby surprise jacket for V. Even though Michele has shrunk every wool thing I’ve made her. She will be getting this with return envelopes so she can send it back to me for cleaning! Hey my handspun is knitting up pretty nice, huh?
Entomology

Looking at the fab illustrations in, "An Introduction to Entomology" originally 1924, I have the 1950 edition. I picked this up because some one was an entomology major, right? Reid? Erin? Kay? Who was it? Let me know because you will have some cool pages coming your way (if you like).

And now I’m off to try and fix that hair cut. Random indeed. I’ve been thinking about the blog lately. Wondering how people find me, who reads me, etc. I’ve been getting lots of emails instead of just comments, which is nice, I just suck sometimes at getting back, so sorry if I haven’t. Bj and I were talking about if too much of us was on the blog. Well him, and he’s a big part of my life. It’s hard to find a balance I think. I read this article in Time once about blogging, and how successful blogs stick to one main theme, topic. Life in Color is all over the place sometimes. But I love it, and I love looking back on it. It’s how my life is. Some here some there, knit, sew, scrapbook, all the crafts. But life overall. My life, and I’m glad some of you look forward to my entry everyday. I look forward to your comments. Much love from me to you!

Cut and Cover

I got a couple of things done this weekend that I have been meaning to do. Including cutting my love’s hair. He wanted me to start with a 1 and when I did a little patch I knew it would be too short. Brent came over half way through the haircut/giggle feast (I can’t help it!) and tried to even him out:
Brent_cuts
I am seriously so bad at cutting his hair. He said today, "I don’t know why I have you cut my hair," to which I replied, "I don’t know why you do either!" Hehehe. Before me his mom cut his hair, but now that it is really short, and just a shave basically it needs to be done more often then he sees her, so I’ve been taking a stab at it. I think I need to take a few lessons from her (she is a retired hairdresser), number one question I have, "how do you stop laughing while cutting hair when your subject makes faces at you?"

I also made a cute cover for my knitting notebook. Still going nuts with

Love Elise fabric paper, Basic Grey, Scrapworks, Making Memories Staples and thrifted dictionary, vocab card, ledger paper, and needle packaging. Much better. I can carry it around now with a little class while I search out more colors of Cotton Classic:
Samples

Mmmmm. And the inside cover:
Insdie_cover

See putting the gigantic Dymo to use! This is one of those journals that I had to buy a whole pack of way back in 2005. I think I’ll have them forever, as my Elmer journaling has fallen to the wayside since the blog. I cleaned up the studio. I have a few things I want to do in here before I take more pictures of it’s new incarnation, including a redo of another wall (why not?) and a window seat thing that I’m still trying to source. Turns out I’m picky….

Dymo Love

I spent all day working on this:
Hello

It has lower case, upper case, numbers, vertical, horizontal, every sign (#$%&*&(, etc.) even some Greek letters, and fractions.  I’ve only got blue, black and a little woodgrain tape right now, but as I stock every dymo auction that should grow. The booklet that came with my machine says dymo comes in "16 different colors of plastic tape". Right now I have blue, green, avocado (the holy grail for me), bright orange, yellow, black, and red in the 3/8 size, and a handful in the 1/4 size. I also have some 1/2 and the aluminum that goes with that machine. So get ready for me to go label crazy!

Portland Quest

On her never ending quest to get me to move to Portland Michele showed me a fabulous day yesterday in that city. Of course it helps that I get to hang out with a couple of my favorite people:
Mom_and_v
Violet is a bit confused by my flash, but she better get used to it, as a gloom has settled over the valley. I swear I don’t know what happened, we went from strategically opening and closing windows to keep the house cool to buttoning them all shut and shivering! There is no way I’m turning on the heat already, or pulling out my warmer clothes, so I’ve resorted to layering and knee highs.

Back to yesterday. I drove up after taking all my packages to the post office. It sprinkled off and on, but the drive was pretty nice as almost all summer road resurfacing is complete on the five, making it so nice and smooth. We hung out, drove around to find this yarn shop I had a credit at, which no longer existed (sob). Then we went to lunch at the CUTEST little place, called P.B. and Ellie’s. I mean when they bring you out water they automatically bring the kids sippy cups. Awe…. Then it was nap time for V, and I knitted more mitered squares because I can not stop. I also check my iPhone for more yarn shops, and it turns out there was one right in the village that sold cotton classic. So we went over there and Michele had to show me all the cutest stores, a candy shop, baby/kidswear shop, bead place, fabric store, toy store. All within a few blocks. Yes, I get it, Portland is awesome, but so is my house, so that’s where the dilemma lies. And now that we’ve got grandpa here we are not going to move for a couple of years. But I still love to visit. If nothing else so I can see all of my friends who are up there. I try to cram them all into one visit, it doesn’t usually work, but I did get to see Matt, Tex, and Martin at dinner. We went out to Serratto’s Yum, yum! A great day in a great city with great friends. Life is good.
