Trust me, you won’t care what I’ve been up to…

When you scroll down, that is. But I’ll tell you anyway. I’ve been painting window frames! If you click that little link to the "my cottage" category you’ll notice that work on the house has dropped off considerably. Well suddenly I’ve had the urge to tie up all the loose ends. See I really, really, REALLY want to re do the front of the house, big porch, new driveway, walkway, flowerbeds, eco-lawn, plant a tree. The thing is I have not finished all the inside stuff, like doors and windows. So I’m getting shit done in the hopes that Bj will agree we’re ready to move onto bigger projects (I dream about the attic). First on that list was a bedroom door, but the thing is I never stripped the paint off of it, or five others, so I’m looking into a place that will do it for me (so time consuming, and yucky).

So I decided to start with the less messy windows. I remember the exact moment I stopped working on them, the same day as my

But again you won’t care about all of that because of this little guy:
Blog02162

My brother comes over while we’re working outside and says, "I have a surprise for you! I got a puppy." To which I said, "ohcomeherelittleguyyou’resocuteandsosoftohmygoodnes!!!" And snuggled its tiny puppy goodness.

Because he is so tiny.

With Brent’s girlfriend Kat. Brent named him Henry because we had a mini weinner named Edward growing up, and he wanted a kings name (never mind that he got Edward from an auto bodyshop on the way home from the breeder). He gets to come visit auntie Amber when Brent and Kat are busy (and hopefully after he’s all trained up). It was a busy weekend, and I’ve still got one day left!

p.s. Thanks for all the great advice on the plates. I’m going to have Bj get them down for me so I can sort out the best six sets, and the cream and sugar.  Then I’ll see how damaged the rest are, I like the mosaic idea, just need to think of something that needs to be mosaic-ed. Oh and I’m going to bid on a machine soon. I haven’t heard anything bad about them. You guys rock, peace out.

The Rose Chinz Delima – ideas anyone?

I’m trying to wrap up like one hundred and one projects around here. Not sure what’s spurring on this, my guess would be the weather. It’s sunny hear, weird, right? No rain in the last few days (well of course there was some, but mostly sunny). I want to work on house stuff, sewing stuff, knitting projects, and especially organizing and cleaning. This brings me to the least used cupboard in the house: the one above the fridge. In it we have a crock pot, rice cooker, and thrifted pop corn bowl, a gravy boat, and our Brita filters. That’s the shelf I can reach… on my tip toes… on a stool. The shelf above that is really a lost cause for me as it requires me climbing up on to the counter top (there’s a reason Bj calls me monkey bones). Up there I have this:
0215085

My great grandma’s rose chinz china. It’s this kind:
0215087

Not particularly rare, or expensive and oddly enough by the same manufacture as the dishes we use

I don’t think you’re supposed to eat on plates that are like that. Bj thinks we should use that tippy top shelf for something else, to which I look way up at his 6’3" head and reminded him that I’m a foot shorter, with shorter arms, my reach, not so good. But still he’s determined to put things up there, and he did point out that I don’t use these. I can’t put them out anywhere else, because of the matchy thing:
0215088

I love my kitchen. 🙂 So I told Bj I could sort through and pick like four sets so I can have enough to have a tea party with Violet some day (and how cute would that be?!?!?!) But he just grumbled, "box them up." What should I do? Ideas on what to do with the rest of them, if they are so chipped up I can’t sell them. Help my blog friends.

And since I’m asking for your help, I have another question. My sewing machine has been a great friend to me these last six years (it was my 21st birthday present from my mom) and I think it’s time for me to upgrade. My two main problems with my machine now: no dropping feed dogs, and no button holes (Or I haven’t figured out how to do it yet). I stumbled on this new (to me) awesome blog: a stitch in dye. She mentioned she pieced and quilted this quilt (so beautiful) on her machine. So I asked, what machine?!?! Turns out it’s a Bernina 1008, not that expensive on eBay (like $300-$400). It’s a workhorse type machine with no digital stuff, but still does like 15 stitches. Does anyone have this machine? Love it, hate it? Have one like it?

This will lead to sewing… eventually

Yesterday I got some great goodies from Brenda, who is way over in Australia!

On Tuesday I made Emilie go into the comic book store with me, and you know what the guy was so sweet to us. I really recommend going to your local shop and getting these inexpensive acid free bags (ment for comics obviously) if you have a lot of patterns. If you ever cut them and they don’t stuff back in the envelope right, or if they are falling apart these are ace. A pack of 100 was like 4.99, and the cardboard boxes (very sturdy and nice) were about three I think. I made the tabs from extra chip board and dymo labels (of course!). Yes I really need to stop organizing and get to sewing. To that end my mom and I got the rest of the fabric we needed for a quilt class we are taking March first. So excited for that. I did do a quick craft (with ribbon):
Necklace1

An old charm bracelet of mine, just tied it together as a necklace with some yummy double faced satin (I used this color and size). I saw this in Blueprint once (RIP). I also think that button necklace that Brenda sent would look good with this sweater, since it would sort of bend it would be all about texture. Oh and I’m getting a haircut today so ignore that do. Other happenings:
Feb131

Been meaning to get this done for um, over a year. My mom had her kitchen re-done and her and Bill gave me the extra pieces of soapstone from the counter tops.
Fireplace1

It will look a little more finished once I finally get the quarter round on the rest of the molding and can oil the stone (that’s how you care for it and it keeps it dark and rich). I was going to have just three big pieces but we didn’t have enough, however I think this ended up being a great solution, and the stone was free so you’re not going to get any complaints from me.

p.s. I’ve lost 2.5 pounds, and my jeans fit looser (looser meaning I can wear them for more than like an hour), whoo hoo!!

p.p.s. Qwest, arghkhlkjsoaidguoaiehlksjgdlkajsd@%!$@%$&@$

Slow down and look around

On Thursday I went up to Portland to visit with Michele and Violet. Ah how I love little V. She is just starting to talk, it has to be one of the most adorable things EVER. When her dad came home from work she goes, "da, da, dad! DAD!" And then Michele said, "say mom," she goes, "ma!" Michele said, "say Amber," Violet turns and points at me. So funny. She was extra cuddly too because she was a bit under the weather.

I left for a while to go pick out new glass (yes I finally found some, I’ll show pictures when they come in… maybe). When I was driving back it was rush hour and I was on Sunset Hwy where it meets up with 217 (a busy area). Traffic was stop and go. Then like instantly the person in front of me wasn’t stopping in time. It was slow motion and super fast at the same time. I slammed on the brakes while punching the emergency flashers button. She slammed into the car in front of her, the guy behind me almost hit my car (I could see his eyes in my rear view mirror). I pulled off to the side, looked back and saw her car was leaking. The guy behind me peeled out and drove away. I moved a little farther up to park behind the woman who got hit. I got out and asked if she was alright. She was, "but what about the other car?" she said. I walked back there. She was in the middle of four lanes, and cars were going on both sides of her. I waved my hand to stop traffic so I could run over to the car. The girl in the car must have hit her head on the steering wheel, she had blood all over her face and was bawling. I helped her out of her car and over to the side. I am way over prepared for this type of thing so I got out my kit rinsed her hands with bottled water and gave her some gauze to clean herself up. She wasn’t badly hurt, just shaken (and apparently freaked out by blood, which sucked because she had tons of it on her). The cops came and I gave my statement and drove back to Michele’s.

The thing is no one else stopped, I mean no one, I don’t get it! And the guy behind me tearing around me like it’s just an inconvenience? Crazyville. I admit when I was a new driver I was a tailgater, but I keep my distance now and I’m oh so glad I do. So that’s my public service announcement for today, SLOW DOWN!

Friday night I had a blast with my crew girl buddies. I’m so thankful for their friendship. The number one best thing about being on crew in college was all the friends I made. I love them to bits and it’s so much fun when we can all get together, even if we can’t all keep our eyes open for a picture.

Not everyone has stayed right around here after graduating. So it was a treat to have Tryon back down for one of our get togethers:

The hostess with the mostess, miss Sciarrino. Fun, fun, way over my caloric target, but fun, fun.

This weekend I spent a ton of time cleaning and organizing. I made the mistake of actually looking under all my furniture, and so half of Saturday was dust bunny removal time. I also met this guy:
Hello1

Ah hahahahaha. Bj forgot I had put this in the oven for him to make a hot dog for lunch, and when I opened the oven the next day it was as hard as a rock, and looked like it had a mouth to me, so I had to dig into the googly eye stash. Speaking of funny pictures:
Toliet_paper1

This is from 2003, when I lived behind the dream with my roomies. We were poor and cheap and never had a surplus of necessities, like toliet paper. This was one night in crisis mode (after using all the kleenex in the house). Another large chunk of the weekend was spent organizing my photos, as in all my digital files, ahhhh so crazy time consuming (but I found gems like this). I was running two photo organizing systems, and had finally decided on one over the other. I’m taking Stacy’s Library of Memories class (over at Big Picture Scrapbooking), and one of the pre-class assignments was to have a favorites file for each season. So I felt like it was time to get my stuff together, and this way it will be way easier for me to back up (with time machine and an external drive). Of course going through pictures just makes me want to scrapbook. So I did.

Nothing to crazy fantastic or original:
Scrap1

(Christmas card collage), but good to get done none the less. And I might have sent Ceara the most hilarious card I’ve ever made (so check your mail next week lady). You may remember I like to send her the most random stuff EVER. Hope your weekends were just as productive and fun!

The longer post I owe you.

Okay first off, I’m still looking for that paper (locally, I have one quarter of a sheet coming from far away, thanks Isabel!). I went to a couple of scrapbooking shops yesterday and got a back up sheet that is close. I don’t think anyone will flog me for having such a small difference, but I want to try and get them to match. So other than jar nonsense and ribbon goodness I haven’t been doing much. This is my first free bit of time in days, and I’m just getting caught up on emails. I will learn my lesson someday, and hopefully then I’ll better pace myself. While I spend most of the last few days sending out packages of happiness, I received one today as well.
Liliyblock2
I got this fabulous sweater over at anti-factory from Stephanie. Oh what you haven’t been over there? Go now, sign up for her newsletter and revel in her awesomeness. She has some serious skills, the thing is put together beautifully. You can still see it here (at least for now). I think I need to rethink putting a green tank under, but oh well. As you can see from above my waist has completely disapeared, boo. I do not understand I am eating so well, drinking craploads of water, and counting calories, but have I lost a single pound, um no. Me thinks I might have to work out (noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

Now for those grandpa stories I’ve been promising you. We’ll start with the ha ha and end with the awe sweet one, K?

We were sitting at the doctor’s office last week awaiting pro-time results. I was flipping through a magazine that has been sitting out for months and probably is loaded with germs, and grandpa taps me on the shoulder. I look over at him, he looks me up and down and says, "where do you buy your clothes?" I was wearing purple tights, a black jersey skirt, a turquoise tee shirt, a black and white stripped hoodie, and black clogs. On top of that I had a longer lighter purple wool jacket and a scarf/hat set I knit out of bulky lime yarn, and some cool nubbly multi colored stuff (that included purple, so it did match).
Me: "why?"
Grandpa: "purple socks?"
Me: "Actually they are tights."
Grandpa: "I just don’t get it purple socks, with all these colors."
Me (louder): "they’re tights grandpa."
Grandpa: "what does that mean?"
Me: "they go all the way up."
Grandpa: "Don’t you own any pantyhose?
Me: "yes, I wear those when I go out."
Grandpa: "hmm. I just never see this look advertised."

LOL like, what? advertised? I’ve never seen the guy pick up a fashion mag. I told him I was unique that’s why, but it totally cracked me up. By the way he was wearing too short joggins (sweat pants) with a zipper I sewed in because he was having problems getting them off fast enough to pee, orthapedic shoes, and a big plaid housecoat thing. When I told him I’d never seen that look advertised he said it was because it was old. Then later when I was taking him back he told me he wished he would have had a girl. I said, "you have me" and did a little twirl. He got a kick out of that.

The other story is from another doctor day (there really isn’t all that much wrong with grandpa except he’s old and in the "maintenance" period of his life). After I always go get him something to eat that is a little fattening, since he weighs less than me and is much taller. He was sick of sandwiches (burgers) so I suggested Taco Bell. As we were sitting in line I turned up my music and apologize came on (not a shock I could listen to it on repeat – hey I’m listening to it now!). Side note: grandpa does not like any music from this century. He does not understand what anyone is saying. So I’ve put on my favorite classical stuff (Romeo and Juliet by Prokofiev) and he said he didn’t like classical music. So I went back to listening to what ever I wanted, as it doesn’t seem he can be pleased in this area. Anyway I’m sitting there dancing around to Apologize and grandpa says, "do you like to dance."
Me: "yes I was on dance team in high school."
Grandpa: "does Bj dance with you?"
Me: "oh, like going out, no we don’t really do that."
Grandpa: "I lived for Fridays."
Me (surprised): "Really, you went out to bars and danced?"
Grandpa: "Yes every Friday."
Me: "But you were married really young right? Didn’t June care?"
Grandpa: "I took her with me! We went everywhere together."
Grandpa turns quite and mumbles: "It’s a damn shame."
Me: "what is grandpa?"
Grandpa: "That she died when she did…. she was my personality."

Awwwwwwwe come one, how sweet is that? Totally sweet, and I’m thinking quite true, as he’s not keen on making new friends now, but their photo albums are filled with parties and get togethers. So those are my stories for now. I might have some more after Friday. Grandpa is now doing physical therapy (that was my doing thank you very much), and I have to go to the appointment. Grandpa doesn’t want to be left alone to have to "listen to all kinds of chit chat."

Help!

Hey does anyone out there have a sheet of this Scrapworks patterned paper?
Ripple_stripe
If you do and you can send it to me tomorrow priority mail (or if you live close that would be awesome also) I would love a sheet. I need more of it for my jar tags for this month. I totally spaced when I picked the paper that one sheet wouldn’t be enough now that I do fifty of them. I will owe you so totally big time, so if there is anything of mine you would like… I know someone out there has to have a sheet of this. Thanks!

Sunset Jar

This weekend was all about getting my jars ready for release today. I stayed up until 3:30am getting it all done. I just can never seem to avoid the late night newsletter, I’m such a procrastinator. Luckily I had the help of my mom and Bj’s otherwise I might never have finished.
01542
But I’m really happy with how they turned out. I think I mentioned this year the theme is nature, and I wanted to do something that seemed at least a bit romantic for February, so I settled on sunsets. I’m releasing 50 of these right here just now. I haven’t forgotton about your pleas for grandpa stories, so I’ll catch you up on him a little later.

And now a shout out to my husband. We had his mom and step dad over yesterday to watch the superbowl and celebrate her birthday. The house was a mess of my ribbon cuttings, food and a birthday banner but when I stumbled upstairs last night after working it was totally spotless. Now that’s love. 🙂

More vintage pattern love

Yesterday a friend of our families came over with such a delightful surprise. She had emailed me to ask if I wanted some old patterns of her mother’s. Of course, I said! I ran into her at a shop a few days later and she told me, "don’t worry I won’t bring all the old needles and things." To which I practically gasped and said, "oh no, I’ll take anything." So I got two big boxes of vintage knitting pattern books and magazines:
0129081

(my piles halfway through sorting them with glee). She also brought over an envelope of circular needles and this:
0129082

Dozens of sets of needles in the funny little box. Now that I’m on Ravelry (here’s my page), I get to keep track of things, like what needles I have. So I can sort these and fill in all the gaps, yeah! Like I said I went through the magazines and I pulled out a box full that I don’t really need (as they tend to be sort of similar, like cardigans, socks, caps, etc.). They are in great condition, a little musty smelling, and mostly from the 40s to the early 70s. If anyone’s interested I’d be happy to send them to you, I can just figure out what postage would be and you can pay that. Let me know.

Well all of that is a lot more fun than my other current project. When I got back from Hawaii I knew I had over eaten terribly over there. Wearing a loose fitting cover up over a bikini doesn’t bode well for keeping portions in check. And since everyone else drank (I’m not a big alchole fan) I probably had a dozen syrupy drinks, like Shirley temples.  So anyway I got home and weighed myself for the first time in a while. Oh my god almost fell off the scale, I had gained 20 pounds since graduating college! Ack! Now I don’t put much stock just in weight, you can eat terrible things and weigh not much. In college I was on the crew team, a coxswain so I usually weighed between 112 and 115. But my diet was almost entirely candy and diet coke (no joke).  I gained weight right away after graduation, since I wasn’t biking to class, walking across the campus, or on the boat. But I have been a terrible eater lately and I can tell the metabolism of my 27 year old self is not as good as that of my younger self. So it’s back to something I’ve done before:
0129083

Keeping track of what I eat and counting my calories. This helps me a ton because candy has a shit load of calories, compared to like, a bowl of cataloupe. Plus you know how some people are big boned? Well my bones are like dainty pieces of glass and I’m short, so in order to keep my weight in check (or loose some) the allowance I get for calories is not a lot. Oh Sciarrino don’t even say work out more, I know you want to, hush! I am going to try a little though. The last time I tried this was over two years ago. I was even lighter then. It’s just so easy to grab a chicken sandwich and frozen coke from Burger King, but NO MORE!

An even better reason

(insert picture of sunny Waikiki beach with sun-bathers)

Bj and I have just gotten back from Hawaii! It was the ultimate in a total relaxation vacation. We did as close to nothing as possible. I did mean to do a post before I left, but I’m the best at last minuet packing, which I did as horribly as usual. Long sleeved shirts and jeans for the beach? Ugh what was a I thinking. We went to Hawaii with these jokers:
Canda1
Carmen and Andrew live up in Alaska, and we visited them this summer. The last time we were in Hawaii was for their beautiful wedding. I hope though you are not looking for some great pictures like that. When I said I was lazy, I mean really lazy. Like went to the beach, laid out, ate, blah. So great. The only problem was the last day when it was a little cooler, so we got the "last day syndrom" and decided that a lot of sunscreen wasn’t needed, oh we are so burnt. It looks like I’m wearing a white bikini with some kind of silly bright red leggings. It really highlights the trifecta I have going on: the ghetto bootie, the Buddha belly, and the the thunder thighs. After all that beached-whale like laying around and eating (mmm macadamia nuts) I am seriously going to go on a healthy eating kick. I so love my sweets, argh!

Well I’m back now, going to get back on my crafting, after all the difference of 50 degrees or so warrants cozying back up with yarn!
